Actually, he joined early July and has had 1 post... I think it is safe to say he's a newbie at Remix64... Maybe not at RKO, but at the Remix64 boards, he is :)

I don't like this at all.

It sounds like a cheap GM synth, and the basedrum is keeping the tune downbeat while the melody is in fact upbeat.

Very bad.

I heard some very good stuff from you earlier, Jason.
Amiga, consoles ?

I'm sure you can do this a lot better!

Ah well, each to their own, Rambones !
Personally, this is how I always felt the original should have sounded IN MY MIND. The thing with all C64 remixes is that its down to personal taste. 3 Channels of SID can be interperated in so many ways - and Jereons music has always been a tricky one to bring "up to date" due to his style.

So, no appoligies for any of it!

See you on Saturday!

Cheers

I don't have a problem with the halftime rhythm - it doesn't get so hectic this way. But there is another thing that bugs me: the song doesn't really groove IMO! The programming seems to be a bit to static, the snaresound in the first part is no good and most of all it's lacking a real bassline.
Nevertheless a solid remix but it doesn't make me nod the head.
Just try to improve the groove a bit, I think it may be worth it. :)

Jason, it's true that we all have our different taste - luckily.

Well what I think you've done is to take the middle road, and I am more into either ends of the spectrum.

I look forward to meeting all who comes to BIT! yeah

Hey Rambone
Basically, I agree!
To be honest, it was the sheer beauty of the melody, bass and chord sequences in this track which i've always loved (not to mention memories of spending something like 20 minutes watching the original demos scrolling message all those years ago...!), so must admit to not trying too hard to move away from that.
I'm actually now remixing my old bosses work (Uridium), which hopefully should be a little more "different" than the original. Chris Abbot once warned me about remixing Jeroens work, and I must admit to finding it VERY tricky to try to move away from his original work,

Anyway, thanks for the feedback!

Cheers

Hehe, in the sense that his work is pretty complete as-is, and so tends to resist genre changes or extra material. Strangely Jeroen has said the exact same thing. They were written as chiptunes, and they stay as chiptunes.

IMO Jeroen has invented a style of music with C64 that you just can't move and get something good out of doing it.

Basicly it's funk rooted in the late 70's early 80's, but the restricted format that 3 channels give you, does so that if you need a drum in there, the bass HAS to be in those beats he uses. So it comes into this format, and if you break the polyphony barrier, you only get trouble :-)

Strong lead takes out 1 channel, then you can either play 1st and 2nd voice of melody, with no drum (like I always did), or have a bass. Then you have 1 chn free to make rhythm to bass, and if you only have base+drum and lead, that sounds quite tame, so most people use the Hubbard/JT bass+drum scheme.

I hate to say it, but all the best tunes in this style, just try to do what Rob or JT has already done.. :-)

This makes SID composing so wonderful, because tricks are made to 'add' voices - and Rob was the first master at this.
