While watching it, I realised I knew almost *nothing* about that place, except the worst nuclear powerplant catastrophy in history of mankind took place there.

I recommend you read the whole thing. I was amazed.
Made me think of what else I take for granted but know nothing about.

I remember the panic that followed... even here in germany, mothers kept their children indoors, afraid of black rain. We performed experiments at school with a ray-spectrograph... and there was a big bump in it - chernobyl.
(There was an huge bump next to it - everydays galactic background radiation.)

Imagine the panic of the locals i Tjernobyl then. They learned of the acciden more than a week afterwards, from erlaives or friends that heard about it on foreign newscasts. Talk about not caring for their people. Oh, good old CCCP. =/

It's a very interesting and informative story being told there.

I certainly never knew of the length of time the radiation-affected areas would stay that way. Chernobyl happened when I was very young so I remember all the news reports about the tragedy but never learnt much more than that till now.

It does remind me of how fortunate I am to not have that scale of devastation to cope with. On a somewhat bleak point, it is something that can't be ruled out happening to me and others worldwide so I guess it's a clear reminder that our existence on this earth is limited and that it's recommended we attempt to enjoy life as much as possible.

We all need to have a clear perspective of our own mortality and therefore come to terms with the fact that life won't go on forever. In short, live life to the full.....

Thanks Sonic for, not only bringing the Chernobyl story to our attention, but reminding us that life is precious and shouldn't be wasted needlessly.
