Not yet - i didnt fancy transplanting one, i was hoping some1 knew of a source of new ones - despite how remote that expectation may be.

Is it one of the ones you have to plug into the back or is it inside the vic?

The VIC-20 has an external modulator. The C64 has it built in. They may or may not be interchangeable, although when I tried to use the external one with my C64, I got a very poor picture.

An alternative to a modulator is if you have a TV with SCART or separate inputs for composite video. Then you can make your own connector using a 5-pin DIN, some leads and either RCA plugs or a SCART connector. You will get a much sharper picture than going through RF. The same can of course be accomplished with a C64 too.

Thx carlsson but on this occasion im gonna go with the old vic 20 bits. I may make a lead for the 64 a bit l8r when i have time to drag it from the loft and set it all up.
