It is Markus Schneider´s "Bírthday" !

Post by putzi »

"Birthday", the SID-song by Markus Schneider, ofcourse!

Imagine a song arranged in a mood like Robert Miles meets the
Pet Shop Boys back in 1991: this is my remix of Markus Schneider´s
Magic Disk 64 classic intro tune "Birthday".

Available now from the download-section of http://www.d418.com
in near-CD-quality: 128-320 KBit VBR stereo (size: 7 MB; length: 4 minutes)

Credits:
Markus Schneider: Original composer; thanks for helping to find the right notes
Sonic Wanderer: Quality Assurance in the hihats-mixage :-)
Dirk, Osch, Racoon: the daily beta-listeners

Dedicated to Markus.

Thank you for the music!

Do you remember the killing joke from Monty Python?
I guess I have made a killing remix, because no-one of the 60+ people who downloaded it gave a feedback :-(

CD

Post by Chris Abbott »

I let people download an entire new CD, and heard virtually nothing... it's pretty normal, I think. Look at the ratio of RKO downloads to feedback emails, votes or reviews...

I got the feeling the better the remixes get, the less feedback people give.
If you release something awful, everybody shouts "what a crap", but if there is not much to find bad, they probably think "what does he want? he should know it is good work". Or wrong? Just a feeling, but I thought so sometimes myself in the time of general lazyness (summer).

btw, what about reviewer no.1 ? Chris? You don´t have an opinion on remixes of Markus´ work? There are SID besides Hubbard and Galway, really. No joke!

Review

Post by Chris Abbott »

It's silly to say I only review tunes where I know the original. It's just not true. The criteria for reviewing the 350 I did were that they were the latest 350 uploads on RKO at the time I did it!

However, it does make it harder to review something you already know.

Also, it depends on whether you want real improvement suggestions (which are of limited use since you've already released the tune), or the standard "pat on the back".)

I'd say that what's there works well, though the C64 bass in there really needs to be backed up by some kind of bassier bass possibly emphasising the rhythm. Otherwise the only real bassy content is the kick drum.

The other thing is that in order for a piece to keep my attention, it needs to change in orchestration over time, which is difficult for a dance piece to do (though I think the best dance singles manage it). You've got some sustained pads near the end...

It just lacks "things going on". You've got the c64 bass, you've got the drums, and then you've got a lead instrument. Later on you've got another instrument coming in, but the attack setting makes it more of an "accidental chord", since the notes flow into one another. The piece would have had more dynamics if this had been a really cruel arpeggio.

So, as I said, what's there hangs together well: you've got a groove going 'n stuff. But I would have liked to hear more instrumental parts in there to give it more spice and pace.

Well, you asked... :)

Unless you're called "Glyn" or "Mahoney" :)

Glyn explored a new area of sound, no question about his work and the feedback.

Thanks Chris, I appreciate your review, honestly.
Especially that I forgot about the bassline...
I think I focused too much on just rebuilding the original with modern technology. The sub-bass was allready so pumping and loud that another bassline looked out of place.

After the german Telekom cutted my DSL broadband internet, i hadn't been online for days ...

So here's my feedback:
Seeing it from the musical i am on Chris' side regarding orchestration and use of the instruments. But as i see the tune as original and as remix with a different intention, i really take it as - just enjoy and listen. The sound quality generally is very good (you have no tinnitus, right ?!).

Finally I appreciate value when people remix my old sids or give me some nice feedback on my new arrangements. It makes me very happy and also a little bit proud  :D

Thanks Sascha ... :!:

Just in case anyone thinks I was criticising Glyn or Mahoney, I wasn't.
I was merely pointing out that Putzi's rule about "the better the cover, the less the feedback" isn't true in these two cases, because lots of people gave good feedback about these two artists.

surround

Post by putzi »

btw, Glyn, is there any chance we´re going to hear a digital-surround-sound-version of the next symphonic masterpiece from you (if you do another symphonic work, ofcourse!) ? Or at least some Pro-Logic?
