Chris Abbott in NO INTERNET SHOCKER! (now fixed)

Post by Kenz »

Chris has pulled onto the hard-shoulder of the information superhighway for a while as his computer has thrown a wobbly (Wobbler goooood) causing his connection to conk out. If you're waiting to hear back from him about anything then he'll get back to you as soon as his internet connection is restored.

That is all, return to your lives citizens, nothing else to see here.

His ISP may support webmail, he could collect it at a library and print it out.

Luckily I don't have to do that, since I'm back online now.

What happened was I installed a Bluetooth dongle and the badly written drivers for it corrupted the TCP/IP stack. It was weird, because the machine could ping, but it couldn't form sockets, which meant it couldn't get a DHCP address. It's strange being able to ping google by IP address and yet not be able to connect to the website...

Solution was to delete the Winsock and Winsock2 keys in regedit and reinstall TCP/IP on top of itself.

This was Windows XP, BTW. So if you ever come across this problem on another computer, you too can be a hero by solving it in five minutes :)
