Aspergers Syndrome.

refering to the thread titled:

may i just point out that my daughter suffers from Aspergers Syndrome, so i'm non too happy with the coments on this thread.

Aspergers for those who are unaware is a mild form of autism, which is particularly hard for people who suffer with the condition to grasp reality. being a parent to such a child who suffers with Aspergers is at best draining and frustrating.

myself and my ex-wife have battled for years to get her condition diagnosed properlly, and during this time i can say as a parent it's certainly no fun, and downright upsetting.

I have worked with people who suffer from the condition... It can be an extremly exhausting, frustrating and painful process for everyone involved; The 'patient', the families, the employees... So saying that it's 'nothing that bad (or worse as someone put it in the other thread)' is boarderline insulting. It's a very easy thing to say when it doesn't affect you.

...And my heart goes out to you Neil. I know a little bit about what you are going through (though obviously I have never been involved in it as deeply as you)...

i think i can understand you from the parents view, 'cause i have also
a little daughter (five month,now..

) and it's no fun to make jokes
about such things....

Honestly, Neil, I did not want to make any joke about it.
Sorry if I did.
I read some reports on it on the web after I read the report from Telepolis (the link I posted) and filled out the web-test, and it diagnosted AS for me. I know I am not really suffering from it, but the facts about what people with AS are like does not seem to make it that worse. Are the reports wrong? The texts I read about it sound like "if youÃ‚Â´re Aspi, youÃ‚Â´ll be a computer guru" or something. Besides the different social life, ofcourse.

Suffering from Aspergers on some levels bears resemblence to being a psychopath (or sociopath as more and more seem to call it these days). Some people have little or no social life because they can't function with other people. I know a guy who's like that. When he's in a social situation with other people he will sometimes get extremly rude and downright disgusting, more or less constantly letting out (or shouting) obscene and disgusting phrases, involving anything from vomit to references to human genitalia, bodily fluids, various form of sex. More often than not it leaves sickening images in the mind of those around him which sooner or later will make them walk away every time he comes near them and eventhough he's not always like this at some point most people will reach a threshold of how much crap they can listen to and from then on avoid him. He's actually a nice guy... But very very sad and lonely. The worst part is that he can't help it. He doesn't want to alienate people like he does, he just doesn't know how to interact 'proberly', he has no control over what he is doing...

So, yes, putzi it can actually be that bad...

Sorry Neil if you took offence when I replied with "Aspergers Syndrom" but I really have Asperger syndrom. It will last all my life I.E I will always be annoying to the most of you. I even know this myself(thanks to Makke) but it's hard, if not impossible, for me to do anything about it. As you probably know it's hard for me to think twice and it will always be, but atleast I try to nowadays. And for that I don't only thank Makke, since I've lost count of people here helping me with this problem, I would like to thank the entire Remix64 website!

Thanks larsec for your words, they speak alot about the problem.

ofcourse larsec speaks about the most extreme of cases, my daughter suffers from AS, but certainly not to such a degree as larsec speaks.

For my daughter, it's very difficult to socialise with other people, although shes very loving and gentle. Jessica (my daughter) aged 7 now, does the most bizarre of things. but it's not for being naughty, it's cos she doesn't grasp the reasons of right or wrong.

As an infant growing up, jessica wasn't able to play with toys in a constructive manner as do other boys and girls. tho she loves to draw.

jessica can also be a danger to herself (this i think is the hardest part). As she doesn't sense fear like a non-AS sufferer. so far she's broke her arm twice, her thumb and countless other injuries. WHY? she doesn't know whats dangerous.

Jessica is able to make friends very easily, however keeping them is a different matter. This is due to poor interactive skills, she's often alienated at school for being different. often being classed as "The naughty girl!", and children just don't want to be her friend because of how she acts.

Jessica at school has also been found to throw stones at people, play in the mud (constantly), have temper tantrums, hit out at others including her teachers.

people with AS often excell in certain areas and can be found to be poor in others. For example with jessica she excells in her volcabulary and her attential to detail in drawing in extrodinary. she came home with a picture the other day which used perspectives. I'm mean she's 7 and she understands how to do perspectives and properlly?!?! However her handwriting and her maths aren't so good.

The main thing about AS is that they really don't understand whats going off around them and they are alienated for it. Imagine a world where nothing made sense, everything sempt confusing and hard to grasp the difference between whats real and whats not.

and i've only just started on the subject. but i think you'll understand that AS is very much ALL THAT BAD!

ps. many AS sufferers comit suicide before they reach 21. only 2% of AS sufferers are able to find work.
