Question concerning copyright

Post by Metal Maniac »

Hello,

may I use a C64 remix as background music for a small game I programmed? The game is part of my diploma thesis "Game Engine for a 3D Space Simulation" and will be published on my homepage as an open source project under the GPL:

http://www.metalmaniac.de/

In particular "Lightforce 2002", arranged by Allister Brimble, would be great (I love the soundtrack of Lightforce, and this remake is my favorite). The game itself is an Asteroids clone with 3D graphics and a realistic physics model. Right now it is more or less just a demonstration of the engine 'cause I'm not good at creating music or graphics. But before I publish it on my web site I have to know if I could include "Lightforce 2002" or should exclude it from the zip file containing the game.

Thanks in advance for feedback.

Normally there isn't a problem with non-commercial use (though it would be polite to ask Alistair). You'd have to make the credits very clear though, including the fact that the music isn't open source, but is very much copyright.

Thank you. Of course I will state clearly in the credits file where each texture, sound or music file I aquired elsewhere is coming from. As for "Lightforce" it would look like this:

Music:
Lightforce, published 1986 by FTL, composed by Rob Hubbard, arranged by Allister Brimble

Is that enough? How may I contact Allister Brimble? Do I have to contact Rob Hubbard, too?

You've also got to add "Copyright 1987 High Technology Publishing Ltd." to that credit string, because it is. There's an email link on RKO to Allister (against his remix). You don't really need to contact Rob since I'm his publisher and thus able to grant you permission.

I will add it to the credits and just contacted Allister Brimble via RKO. Thank you very much!
