Zybex - Work in progress

Post by merman »

Hi there, thought I'd start 2005 with a SERIOUS attempt at remixing, and here's the progress so far:

Zybex - Clocks remix WIP

Needs a bit more polish, and some drums. Comments and criticism welcome.

EDIT: version 2 now online, please listen and place feedback in this thread

Well, the idea's there for sure, and there's some good ideas in there. The piano backing that accompanies most of the track is a good example of this. However, the mixing seems to be way over the top in terms of volume and the tune sounds pretty heavily distorted. Don't know if that's intentional or not, but that'll put people off listening to it. I'd pay attention to that in the first instance and get it mixed with a lower volume and a bit more EQ.

Instruments are pretty much there and present, but you may also need a stronger lead to keep the tune going, as in parts it seems a little on the weak side. Don't know if the tune actually needs a drum beat though, as the original didn't have one and it seems to flow without one in any case.

Keep at it, there's ideas there and it's the execution which takes the most amount of time to perfect. If you get even part of the way there on your first attempt, I'm sure people will appreciate it.

Mixing/mastering is still a mystery to me, so any advice/help would be appreciated. And thanks for the comments Waz!

I concur with Waz, the volume is way to loud. Quite it down a bit and then we can have a good listen to it. :D

Well, I'm sure in FL Studio you could reduce the volume of each sample, that would help for a start. If you can't, and the sample is a wave file, use a good wave editor (the one that comes with Nero will do if nothing else) and reduce the volume of it there first).

See how you go..

mixing mastering is pretty simple (haha!!! ahem).. its to me one of the more difficult parts due to the equipment or lack of that i have.

waz is definitely right about using wav editors.. and usually on most if not all music programs there is individual volume sliders for each track.. hell even ejay has them readily available.. good luck with it mer.. its a learning experience.. the idea's are good.. hope you get it all sorted.

OK, version 2 is now online (same link, up there in the first post in this thread)

Hopefully I've sorted out most of the volume problems, made some minor adjustments to some of the instruments.

The distortion is/was partly intentional - I wanted a grungy guitar sound, because that's what the original tune always reminded me of.
