Spellbound (Remiximus)

Post by devilhood »

Hey,
I finally got round to finishing off my Spellbound mix :P
More effort went into this mix than anything else I have previously worked on. .
I decided to keep with the spirit of how my Human Race mix was done, in-terms of trying to create a contemporary remix without losing the original C64 spirit.

Everything seemed to go pretty well as I was recording, it was great fun layering and arranging the percussive parts. .
I always believed that the beat in the original was the most distinctive feature.
I sacrificed the ring modulation effect at the start, but brought it in towards the end as I didn't want to intrude over the strings.
The guitars were quite a task to record, I managed to include a Classical Guitar half-way through the tune, a very old one with lots of salotape on to stop the wood from vibrating *g* :D
Harmonies were a massive focus on this piece as well, the strings really seemed to bring together each section quite naturally.
I gave the third section in the piece a rock overhaul (-) the rectified or modern hi-gain lead distortion is probably the ultimate replacement sound for a C64 synth lead imho.

:: RKO ::

Here is a link to the remix from my band web-site:

:: Spellbound (Remiximus) :: 13.6 Meg

Feedback is welcomed, hope everyone enjoys listening!

Cheerz,

Pawel.

Its a really good effort and almost there...

Think it misses some dynamics here and there and some subtlty.. Also has a few questionable notes in there on the odd time too..

But not to be too harsh on the mix cos its very very good.

The dynamics were pretty hard to balance on this, with so much in the piece itself it became tricky. The middle parts are the main 'breathers' to try and space things out a bit.
I probably would have focused more attentively on dynamics if I took a broken down orchestral approach, without the rest of the instrumentation.

Questionable notes? :?

Interestingly this mix isn't too different to thomas deterts version on r64 v2 (without the guitar section in anyway).

Dunno if you have the CD mate, but i'd give it a listen.. Could be an interesting experiment to compare them both.

I know what you mean though, the part from 2:44 onwards can play on the mind a bit, but once heard through a second time it settles on the ears.
Unless it was a different bit you meant hehe :)

*edit*

I haven't heard Thomas' version, I will definitely try and check that out at some point.

*shiver*

As for the mix:
Interesting take on Spellbound.
The mix of instruments gives it an edge.
All is lost.

Great tune, Pawel!

I was really looking forward to this, since your Human Race tune is one of my absolute RKO favorites. Parts of Spellbound give me goose bumps as well, but I think I hear some of the "funny notes" that initially annoyed Tas. I wonder if some of the "piano chords" from the original SID that kick in at about 22 secs don't blend in with the string chords? I still find it a bit unsettling, but it sort of disappears towards the end, and the other parts are just great :)

So at the moment you qualify as one of my remix herose! I really hope to enjoy many more remixes from in the future :) Keep up the great work!

Well, listening back to the mix over and over, I can't hear any clashes between the piano and strings from 0:22 onwards, and I 'should' hear them because I'd say my ear is pretty geared in with the classical side of things; perhaps it is just a subjective difference.
The only element that would really effect the harmonies is the bell sample that plays every now and then, but imo the string section definately plays a non-intrusive melodic progression.
I suppose people are just very used to hearing the SID piano chords being played on their own

I'm going to do a remix of Star Paws next (sub-tunes one and two), the tune has always been a huge fave of mine
