Heard this remix... fantastic :)

Post by Feekzoid »

Now, I'm not a HUGE fan of Metallica, I like a lot of their music per se, but find the vocals quite boring after a while...

so when I found this remix I was well chuffed, not only because it uses my favourite instrument in the world (Variable Pulsewidth octave bass!) but also because I know how much it will offend my metal head DJ pal :)

The track if you want to track it down is Apoptygma Berzerk- Fade to Black

I'll put up a little snippet of it which should'nt offend anyone hopefully - except the Metallica fanboys mebbe ;)

No great shock to me. It sounded a heck of a lot better than that dance version of Alice Cooper's "Poison" that I heard the other day.
Great, another set of strings ruined...

Apoptygma have also done a C64 remix of one of their own tracks. :)

That is, they used the SID as an instrument instead of the synths of the original track and kept the original vocals. It's really cute.

I love the Welcome to Earth CD but I hadn't realised that was a Metallica cover - and I'm supposed to be the metal nut I guess ;)

Which one is that? I want to ask them for permission to play it on the podcast. :D

From the top of my head I know they've done a C64 version of "Kathy's Song".

Also they did a song called "APB goes C64". If I remember correctly their "Snutt 7" sounds rather C64'ish as well...but I've not heard that one in a good while so I could be wrong.

Ah yes. Located it on the Kathy's Song CDM. Sounds rockmonitorish.

So would I go about generating such sound? Any VST instruements that you know that could produce such sound?

I've used it in many of my own tracks now... its kind a personal signature :)

I use Pro-52 VST to make it, there's a default instrument which is called "warmbass" - I just take the filter off, make it a sharp short sound by adjusting ADSR...er and adjust loads of other stuff....

Its pretty much the same as a C64 pulsewidth waveform, made a little phat.

Where the niceness comes out of it is that the pulse envelope is not retriggered each type the note is played, the pulsewidth continues to oscillate as the instrument is played.

You can hear it in my own Archetype cover from about 2.30mins in... but its more prevalent in an original work I did:
