Frankly, I'd go with the "coincidence" option here. The chord sequence is pretty standard, and they haven't ripped the hook, but it's still a good spot

Obviously. "Sea of Sin" uses them, too btw Both are great great songs.
And the clip sounds quite promising, while the last album "Exciter" was somehow disappointing IMO.

Don't get your hopes up—it's a pretty "meh" album. It is, thankfully, better than the band's post-1980s nadir that was Exciter, but it's a painfully long way from the band's glory days. A lot of the album is just pretty dreary, lacking the hooks, oomph and atmosphere that the band had in its "glory days". There are perhaps four above-average tracks on there, in my opinion: one is the single, which sort of recalls ETS (although it's not as good); one is the opener, A Pain that I'm Used to (although this opens with a thoroughly obnoxious noise); and two, shockingly, are Gahan-penned (Nothing's Impossible and Suffer Well, which is probably the album's highlight).

The production is better than in previous efforts, and the band in general seems to finally be getting over Wilder's departure. However, it seems to be aching to be relevant in today's market, what with all the background buzzes and bleeps that end up sounding like NIN or Warp Records cast-offs. Vocally, Gahan has never sounded better, but the guitars are massively under-used (when they're there, they sound great). It's a real 5/10 album, as far as I'm concerned.

my friend who is a HUGE depeche Mode fan might not agree with you there... although i don't really know as yet... I will see her tomorrow night so i'll have to ask what she thinks of the new album...

Well, it's not like I'm saying this as some kind of DM newcomer—I have every one of the band's non-rip-off releases (i.e. I don't own all the live or remix albums), and a shed-load of the CD singles. I imagine plenty of DM fans will see this as some kind of "return to form", but that's only because Exciter was so appallingly bad.

PTA isn't a bad album—it's just not a very good one.

phew, IMO playing the angel is one of the best depeche mode albums, i
love the heavy use of old electronic instruments & effects....and it's
much better then the last album....

I guess, like everything else, it's down to personal opinion. I'd certainly agree that this is DM's best album since Songs of Faith and Devotion, but then Exciter and Ultra were both pretty ropey. It's also better than the band's really early efforts (the middling Speak and Spell and the largely saccharin and meandering A Broken Frame). I can't think of any other DM album it betters, though—it's certainly nowhere near SoFaD, Violator, Black Celebration, or even Music for the Masses.
