my 'D' drive has just decided that it will die.
i got sounds from it like the heads were parking (sort of --- 'clunk wuuurrr clunk' and win xp locked up.
after hiting the reset button (nothing else worked) xp reboots and 'D' drive is no-longer called 'swap' (i had C as 'main', D as 'swap' and E as 'temp') but its now called 'generic hard disc' or some crap.
if i try to open it xp (bless its cottons) tells me that 'this drive is not formated' and 'would you like to format it now?'
erm,
no.
i would like it to work again. all 20 gig of it please.

anyone got any idea at all on how to get it working ?

all my emulators ..... all of my retro games ... Rob only knows what else there is ... 15.3 gig of stuff is at stake here.

'my computer - properties - hardware' reports that "this device is working properly' (dont you just love windoze)

it sounds like you FAT is screwed.. I had the same problem, used a program called EasyRecovery, got everything back...

i love you and i want to have your childern.

EasyRecovery did the job ,with a lot of work, and i have D drive back

i had to zip up most of C drive and store it on E drive to make 15 gig of free space for the revovery.
now, after reformating D, pasting the recovered files back, unzipping the stuff back onto C, i just need to defrag.

steve b, i hope you don't trust that hdd anymore with sensible data

it may be screwed but on the other hand xp and ntfs are known for such hickups... hopefully it was just a 'hickup'. apart from the screwed fat - got corrupted sectors or something like that ? if so you are likely into trouble with that hdd.

i have run every check i can find on the hard drives since 'that' happened and everyone of them comes back as 'fine'
i will be buying another hard drive at the weekend though, just in case.
