WIP: Monty On The Run (song 1)

Post by tribbles »

Hi,
I'm nearing the completion of my 15 year aim to do a remix of the main theme for Monty On The Run, and I'd like some other ears to listen to it (I normally compose my own music).
Obviously this one hasn't taken me 15 years, but it was then that I decided I wanted to do my own version of it. This one has taken me a fraction of that time :)
The only thing that I'm a bit concerned about is the fact that there aren't that many of them - I've only come across 2. Is it too close to the Devils' Gallop to be done? I've bought a copy of it, and while there are similarities, I don't feel they are the same. If it is too close, I'd like to know (I'll just keep this one to myself :) )
http://www.tribbeck.com/music/remixes/m ... -drive.mp3
This is moderately close to the original (Rob Hubbard's :) )
Any suggestions or comments welcome - I'm not sure about the ending, and I may have slightly overcompressed it (first time I've used compression).

Er, I've done three myself (with Rob Hubbard - 2 on CD and one in MP3). There was another one from Rickie Blaikie from way back, and O2 recently covered it. So there isn't really that much of a shortage. My 2 CD ones are selectable on Slay Radio.

Sound quality on this one is a bit muted (high frequencies missing, possibly a mastering problem), the main lead is in entirely the wrong key for the bass (you didn't notice??) as are some of the instruments... although the "Popcorn and Bladerunner meet Monty" vibe is quite a good idea. Sorry I can't be more positive (really sorry, since it's your first post and you've obviously put some effort in!), but the obvious and painful musical deficits are kind of hard to see past.

Thanks for the comments - I'm not offended in any way as this is the first one I've done, and I really want to know where I've gone wrong.
I'll have a look out for yours - I've got the O2 version (it was part of the reason for having a bit of a push on it), but I can't remember what the other one I've heard is.
I know there's a couple of places where the key seems a bit wrong - and it's the first thing on my list to sort out (maybe I was a bit premature in releasing it :) ).
Not sure about the high frequencies - I've just replaced the device I record with because the previous one was removing mid frequencies. It could just be the choice of instruments.
Thanks again for the comments!

Okay, I've just spotted a hugely massive vast mistake. For some reason, I decided I couldn't read music any more :)
I was writing it based on a transcription that my brother had done a few years ago, and instead of putting in a C, I decided to put in an A.
I'll redo it then

Chris - many thanks for your comments once again.
I've been a complete muppet in several places, and it's one of those things where you need someone else listen to it to tell you where it's wrong (which was the point in releasing it now). I'd been listening it for so long, the mistakes seemed like they weren't mistakes (although in the back of my mind, I knew they were wrong).
I think I've corrected everything (my cats have a habit of walking on the mixing desk, and I think they knocked the high frequencey equaliser setting a tad).

I've renamed the old one, but if anyone wants to see how much of a muppet I was, I'll give you the URL for that one :)

D'oh! What a night.
Yes, it's .mp3 rather than .mpg - my mistake. Again!

Analog-X wrote:so is the http://www.tribbeck.com/music/remixes/m ... rive-2.mp3 the fixed one?
It's the latest one, and I'm sure I've fixed it (just downloaded it, and although needs a little more compression, at least has the errors fixed [or the ones I could spot  ]).
Otherwise, I'll have to finish off the time machine I have in my garage and go back a couple of days and shoot myself first :)

Final WIP

Post by tribbles »

Hi - I thought long and hard about whether to resurrect this thread, or to create a new one - I think you can see which I did :)

After a while of messing around, switching over to Mac+Logic (from PC+Cubase), and finishing building a car, I've finally had some time to do a bit more work to this.

I'd like to thank everyone for their comments (even though I was a bit of a muppet at the time [probably still am])

This is probably the final WIP that I'll be doing before uploading it to Kwed - so any final comments would be most appreciated.
