c64 DTV mods...can this be done

Post by tomsk »

Okay - I took the old C64 DTV away and after about 1hr play, I began to wonder if anyone can change the games. Yes - I know you can hook a disk drive up and a keyboard - but is it possible to replace the rom with a new selection of games? Yes - there's copyright issues I know, but the DTV is such a cool device it seems a shame to have 75% of it filled with crap.

This got me to thinking of the top thirty games I'd choose - and I was suprised at my choices because some of them are based on what would play well as a quickie game.
So that's all of your adventures and games like Mercenary out of the window. And of course some games would suffer with running issues (such as having to select modes using the Fkeys.

Any thoughts or comments ?

That would be cool.

Has anyone thought of starting a site with a page or two dedicated to Moding them?

Just stumbled across this after Analogue asked the question. Most of the text is just mumbo jumbo to me, but it appears one or two people have gotten utilities and games running (as well as photo's too!!)

Anyway - one of the mods puts a memory card (XD) in place with options to output to a better quality joystick.

If someone came up with a mod to add 30 games of your choice - how much interest would there be, and how much would you be prepared to pay ??? Just thinking out loud again.........shhhhhhhhhhhhh

CSDB often has several utilities released for the DTV but are loaded from disk (iirc), TMR would know about this sort of stuff, would think its possible with a little tinkering with the controls and loading code.

When I was at X2006 I saw streettuff play with his C64DTV ..
And had a bit of a chat..

What I gathered is that the best mod seems to be a mem-card reader and play with that..
You can make it do stuff no other 64 can (256 colour display and the likes).
It's like the C65 only not :)

All C64DTV downloads on CSDB:

Loads of nice stuff..
ASCII stupid question, get a stupid ANSI
And when in russia, pet a PETSCII

Cool thanks for all the great info....another future project to the already 1000 000 gazillion (is that a word?) projects in the queue.

I generally do my own mods up to a certain point, just like Wird Al and he's "White and Nerdy" video, I'm pretty good with a soldering gun.

In general I find MOD instructions not the best kind as usually they are an afterthought and some steps are missed. But I can muddle my way through them.

I have one C64DTV but will have to explain to the wife why I need another one......or maybe more. ;)

Hey Analog - just as an additinal comment, my g/f phoned me to say she'd seen a pile of brand new c64 DTVs for ....... wait for it.......£3.99

So I snapped up two. DOn't know if I'll be techie enough to follow any of the mods though. Some good info on these sites though I'd still love the idea of a memory card you could pop games onto as you pleased.

Wow excellent very lucky. I dont know how common or easy it is to find C64 DTV's in Europe.

The C64DTV that I have I purchased about a year ago in the U.S. for $14.99 and that price had dropped from $30.

I will probably endup buying one or two from EBay, as our local Gaming Shops are pathetic, if its not a GameCube / PS2 / XBOX forget about it.

Retro is hard to come by here (Canada), its a matter of luck.

Ok It turns out the C64DTV I have is the USA/Canada Version 1....which lacks the 256 Color and is only 128K.

So I need to find either the Version 2, which is the NTSC/PAL European version or the HUMMER Game.
