Need advice for MP3 Hosting...

Post by Analog-X64 »

A friend of mine has been hosting MP3's on another friends server account, he's averaging about 2.5-5 gigs a day of streaming and over 100 gigs a month and he gets charged a $1 per gig, averaging about $150 for him a month.

The friend who owns the server account no longer wants them hosted, he suggested a site that will host the mp3's for a one time $20 fee, but a few streams.. it will redirect you to register with their site or you can't download or stream the songs anymore.

There are about 7 Albums with 16 tracks each, so I would imagine just under 800MB of storage.

Any hosting ideas / Suggestions?

Would a Rapid Share account be an idea??

There are some sites I've noticed that offer files through Rapid Share and those files dont seem to expire. Like regular accounts. What do you guys think?

I initially thought RS, but can they offer streaming? Don't know...

[edit] If he's attracting a lot of visits, there is always (spit) advertising space to consider too - banners, etc...

First thing that came to my mind also Chris :) But it should probably be C64 related since John can't host the whole internet like I can't backup the internet. Mind you we both do our best to achieve it :)

I certainly do not want to burden anyones server here.

Streaming is not important at the moment, I can deal with that later with some kind of Flash PLayer with low quality 64k samples or something.

But the important part is sharing the files somewhere that can handle the bandwidth and is reasonable in price.

Right now I'm hosting my wifes website for $15 a month for 1GB Storage and 20GB Transfer per month, which would not even come close to the demand these MP3's would require.

I'm asking for advice here, because many are more experience with this type of thing than I am.

The Time is getting near for the curtain to close....

One last chance if anyone has any kind of suggestions where to host 7-10 CD's worth of MP3's... would be appreciated.

If no streaming is required, I still say use RS. He can set up a folder of his stuff and advise people to get around the download limit with the old 'disconnect and reconnect' trick (most users will be allocated a new IP address so can continue to download without having to wait).

Or stump up the cash for some webspace, of course! ;)
