Here is a quick update on 99% positive identified ST-01 (46/126) sample sources prior to http://www.st-01.com going online. I have leads for another 30 or so, I'm really struggling with the percussion and there is definitely a missing synth.

All of the above are based on original factory synth presets.
Some of the Amiga samples have been made using delays and
tailing of the original source - eg. Call
NB: Some ST-01 samples appear to be transposed by 1 octave and given
another name - hence the reason why some synth presets appear
more than once. Last Update: 27/07/08 D.Wilson.
The synth sounds I'm clueless on at the moment are:
Aligator,AnalogString,Asia,Breath,Celeste,
Chink,Cinema,DeepBass,Detune,EPiano,
ExBells,FilterBass,FunBass,Gato,Great,
HallBrass,JahrMarkt1,Klickorgan,Leader,
Magic,MonsterBass,Organ,PanFlute,Perco,
PolySynth,Pulse,RoomBrass,SoftBass,
Soundtrack,Squares,Strange,Strings1,
Strings2,Strings3,Strings4,Strings5,
Strings8,Sweep,SyntheBass,
SynthPiano,TechBass,WabberString,
WowBass.
Any more clues would be great

This put a smile on my face, what a great inititiative!
Sorry, I don't have any additions to your list. But I noted that "PolySynth" was both in the identified and the unidentified list... =)

I'm doing a conversion of Amegas by Kartsen Obarski on the Nintendo DS. Would be neat to use higher quality versions of the samples.
Is there any plans for some kind of Database in the future to identify the samples by song? Example: Searching for Amegas would spit out all the samples used in the tune plus where the original sounds came from.

Hi,
I had thought of doing something like that but I'm a tad concerned the whole project is going to snowball. That said - we could limit ourselves to just songs from the ST-01/Ultimate Soundtracker disks.
As for a DS remake of Amegas - sounds interesting but before remaking the music with high quality samples I'd be very careful about getting Karsten's permission first.
Keep me posted.

I'm converting Amegas to DS for fun, not for anything else.. and the end result will be an XM Version of essentially the Amiga one. not for commercial purposes.d.a.wilson wrote:Hi,

I have a total of 3 Hours driving to work a day (1.5 hours each direction), I than get a 30 Minute lunch and two 15 minute breaks. I'm up at 4:50AM and sometimes dont get home till 10:00-11:30PM.
Ofcourse this is not a permanent situation so for now thats all I can do to keep my sanity.
This project is great, I've often thought where the original samples came from, and I'm glad someone has decided to grab the Bull by the Horns.
Looking forward to the ongoing updates.

Re: Project ST-01 : 44/126 Original Synth Presets Identified
Many of the sounds strike me as "Juno" or "Jupiter" when listening to them. Dig a bit into the presets of those golden oldies in the Roland synth line. I do seem to recall there being Juno 60, Juno 106, Jupiter 6 and Jupiter 8.
Just a thought.....
Also, some bell sounds bring to mind the Ensoniq synths, like the ESQ1..... also maybe worth a check.
Oh, heck, check the Korg Polysix and Poly61 too, they sound familiar in the bass region. Also famous and widely used in the era of early 80's and possible candidates for sampling for that very disk. Who knows......
Hope you can get a full cover on this project, it is very interesting indeed.
Edit: I see you've covered the Juno106 sources.... but still.... check the Juno60 and the others.
Cheers! =)

Re: Project ST-01 : 44/126 Original Synth Presets Identified
A friend of mine had a Yamaha DX-11 that had many Bell sounding Presets... was the DX-11 not out during that period of time when the ST-01 disk came out?

Re: Project ST-01 : 44/126 Original Synth Presets Identified
Hi Sonic,
I did wonder about the 60 - I will have to cross compare the sample names with the factory presets listed in the manual. Although the 60 and 106 have NVRAM presets they don't display preset names - only numbers unlike the alpha/MKS50, Jupiter-8, JX-8/10 and Super JX.
There is no doubting that some of the samples are Juno106 derived. Pingbells is an interesting one - it has turned out to be an absolute sod to sample as it simply doesn't sound the same from one key press to another.
Actually this raises an interesting point. Although we all like the expressiveness of a good synth sometimes it doesn't actually sound as good in the mix as a "snapshot" sample of the instrument. I was playing with my D50 in the studio the other day and noted that again a snapshot sample of Tinewave sat more comfortably in a mix than simply using Tinewave out of the box. Don't get me wrong, it's a wonderful sound, but somehow not very easy to use as an expressive instrument in a real world mix. The flip side of this is that because in many instances since ST-01 made use of nothing more than single shot samples of expressive instruments it's very tricky to sample them in an identical manner to the original sample. In many cases this involves making sure the same key, velocity, note length, envelope and FX processing is used. It's further complicated because on much closer inspection in Sound Forge several of the beloved ST-01 samples actually sound the way they do due to clipping and DC offsets. In fact these defects actually give some of the bass and percussion sounds a much more punchy attack and 8 bit aliasing gives many pads presence due to harmonics.
This is actually a good example of where you might think using the best equipment might improve a sound when in fact it's the deficiencies in an older instrument that give it it's magic - this is why the early Fairlights sounded so punchy and why the D50 sounds are full of crazy but lovable harmonics. If either instrument used 24 bit DACs at 96KHz they'd sound pale and thin.
