Off topic website creation help

Post by tomsk »

I know there are some fine web page designers hanging around here. I've been asked if I can create a 'whats new' page for a website. Rather than have to code and insert pictures manually using (arrrgh) Frontpage, is there some some of program that will allow me to upload a picture or two and create some text. The idea is that all pics and news should be available throughout the history of the site, and perhaps only recent news (aka Remix64) be shown on the homepage.

Any ideas - remembering my technical knowledge is becoming somewhat legendary around here.

Usually you would use a small Content Management System (e.g. Joomla) for such a purpose :)

But installing and customizing it would need some technical understanding and a Webspace with PHP and MySQL. So maybe get someone to install it for you, after that it´s quite easy to handle.

The bar for webdesign has been set so high now, that I find my old skills of HTML + Notepad wont cut it anymore.

Now you pretty much every website needs some kind of PHP or SQL Database to compete.

The original Dreamweaver pre MX Series was good and than it became too complicated.
FrontPage tends to break my code more often, than anything else.

I'm using GoLive by Adobe for now.

On my wifes site, I used "Site Builder" which was included as part of the Hosting Services we subscribed to.

on another Site Project... I used the WordPress code, rather than install the blog system, I used the code and css to get the site the way I wanted to look... would be easier with wordpress installed I guess.

If you want simple Text and Graphics, all you need really is a basic page, which you can create in anything from Notepad to Microsoft word.

If you need help with it, I can make something simple for you.

If you need an opensource content management system, there's only one: ModX (http://modxcms.com). I've used it on quite a lot of websites and it's just awesome. It's 100% customizable (is that a word?). PHP and SQL required.

Thanks for the tip.. my wifes site needs to be revamped and I'll look at this and see what can be done with it.
