Making use of SID remixes in a freeware game...

Post by Gazoo »

Hey c64 music enthusiasts,

I've been commissioned to create a freeware game for handicapped people who use an eye tracker as their primary means of computer interaction. Frantically searching this forum I came across this thread:

viewtopic.php?f=3&t=666&hilit=+legal

Which to me sounds like non-commercial use of a SID remix is a game would be alright? Of course I'd show common curtesey and ask each remixer regarding usage, but I'd still like to hear if someone can confirm if this type of usage is ok?

The games source will be released under the GNU license and will encourage people to donate towards development of applications for people using eye trackers...

Assuming that the use of remixes is good to go - I'd be very willing to hear if someone has some music suggestions for a medium to fast paced game involving trains? I have some ideas of my own, but additional ideas are very welcome.

Regards,

Gazoo

Your assumption is wrong. You need to get permission from all right holders or representatives. Others may have received permission to use a remixed tune but that doesn't generalize to everybody - you included. Nor does it mean that something suddenly is in the public domain. Basically you cannot know anything about the agreement: there might be money involved and other unknown issues. An agreement which you - at least - must honour as well.

So: Get permission specifically from every right holder for each tune, including composer, lyrics author, game company, remixer, record label, etc. <-- NOT a complete list! It's up to you to cover your own back!

Alternatively, ask me, chris@c64audio.com and I'll sort something out so it's 100% legal, and tell you what the credits should read.
