C64 for iPhone rejected by apple

Post by scarnie »

Hey all,

in case you're all interested, we ported an emulator to the iPhone and submitted it to Apple for approval, but was rejected. Any support you show would be greatly appreciated!

Here is a great review and video by pocketgamer.co.uk.

Cheers,

Stu

Surely this would have been a rejection for legal reasons? The C64 ROM is still copyrighted, and that would make Apple extremely nervous (I guess they would have overlooked the fact that the SIDplayer emulates a C64 too).

Absolutely Chris; however, we have fully licensed the ROMs from Commodore Gaming and Kiloo Aps :)

It's kinda funny, if this app had been accepted I may never have heard of it. But since it's been rejected, it's a story that I'm seeing on a number of tech sites. Whether that's a deliberate marketing ploy or not, this coverage will probably work out to the developer's advantage since it seems the app would likely be accepted with a few changes.

Apparently it was rejected for violating section 3.3.2 of the iPhone SDK agreement. Which states that:

"An Application may not itself install or launch other executable code by any means, including without limitation through the use of a plug-in architecture, calling other frameworks, other APIs or otherwise. No interpreted code may be downloaded and used in an Application except for code that is interpreted and run by Apple’s Published APIs and built-in interpreter(s)."

A bit puzzling since both SID Player and Frotz run emulated code. Both of them are available on the iPhone App Store.
