Sounds like a sampled slap bass sound to me. I've collected a load of similar slap bass samples for the "Two Tribes" esque Formula 1 Simulator. Check your mail...

I would guess any of Yamahas FM synths available at 1985 (like DX7)

This was my thought too. It sounds very FM'ish. That's why I suspect it to be some preset synth bass, rather than a sampled one.
