A decent enough little potter on the synth with a fine little tune. But why not improve on that generic sound by using the sonics of my current fancy the NES?

Heh, sounds good, sounds good.. ButI know what you mean about these 'new ones' have more than a few kicking around on my HD as it is just waiting for that one that "works".. Upload as many as you make pal, it's good to hear the process from anothers point of view. Keep calm and carry on!!

Yes indeedy. However, isolating long notes or chords found in many games, for example Pinball or Super Off Road, means you can use more straightfoward single waveforms, rather than clips of layered sounds more obviously chopped out of someone else's music.
Try a 'castle' level in Super Mario Bros. 3 and see what I mean. Try playing with the channel faders in NEStopia for even more control. Playing with NES sounds couldn't be easier.

Thanks for the links Analog. I didn't know about many of those, though on some the 'retrograde' effects were too clever for their own good.
Peach and Toad are good but I prefer Toad a lot better. Toad is packed with NES effects, though you'd have to sample them to stretch the same sound across the octaves. Lovely stuff.
Use a mixture of VSTi plus sampled bits from the games (with perhaps snips from the MIDINES example MP3s from the website) and there's nothing which can't be done. My wall Nintendo, plus emulator and VSTi set is just the mixture to get the very best.
Now to spend some quality time piping my Instant Music MIDI through one of the PCs to kiss the sky.

Sounds good to me Analog... I like the sine-arpeggio in the background... have you thought of trying to make the volume envelope of that sine sound with a softer attack and decay to give it a more "swoop" time of volume curve? ... also try eventually a tiny bit of vibrato on some of the notes to give it more life?
One thing to remember is, that reverb on static SID like type sounds usualy give the reverberation a metallic sound to it that can sound "wrong"... just a tiny bit of vibrato will totaly remove this... a trick is to put a vibrato effect before the reverb send, if you do not want that vibrato on the instrument itself, but the reverb will be more full because of the vibrato effect before it.
Using modulation on melody and accompanement tracks often give the "life and character" that you might be after, if it's too static, it just sound programmed... again, that depends on what you're after... in some cases that's what you want.
But I can tell you, that on my Sennheiser HD600 headphones, the audio quality actualy sounds rather good... nice and clear instruments, nothing seem to mud up or anything
