There are stacks of good synth programs available which are compatible with the Music Maker overlay. These include programs with the new MSSIAH and COMMODULATOR kit.
So I'm just curious if anybody else has actually used the little piece of plastic to perform on the 64 when recording? I've seen 8-bit Weapon on video so I know it's not just me, though I typically use mine when making low-fi demos.

Does anyone else use the Music Maker overlay in session?

I wouldn't mind picking up the Playalong albums (Beatles, Beethoven) some time

One use I consider most impressive is being able to use the humble plastic 25-year old overlay to play crisp, new 24-bit samples via the Sound Expander MIDI module! (And there's also the 5 octave keyboard I use with it too.)

My own photo of the Datel MIDI cartridge and SFX expander: http://www.leftiness.org/Records_files/image001.jpg
Don't know about you, but I think it's rather magic!

Music Maker - Commodore Format version
Here's some homebrew Music Maker software, purely for completeness.
COMMODORE FORMAT ISSUE 30:
Given the peak of C64 software quality in 1993, surely they could have put Density's Music Machine on their covertape. This crude BASIC offering was at least ten years out of date.
Far from unpleasant though: http://www.leftiness.org/MUSIC_MAKER.PRG

The Executive 64 Music Synthesizer, with basic harmony, waveform and octave changes.

Which ran in BASIC, until I compiled it to zap the sluggishness. Though now it runs too fast to properly scan the keyboard input so I added a time delay in the scanning process. Key presses now change a note as it decays, which is actually pretty snazzy.
On top of that, the demo music whizzes through so fast you get a great lightening randomness to sample.

Re: Does anyone else use the Music Maker overlay in session?
Oh yeah and there's the GO MICRO utility as well: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=8084
It even has a backwards voice and split keyboard, just like Jarre!
But it is rather crap though, unlike him. Better for sampling.
