Y2K all the way with MIDI synths fresh from the scrap heap

FRIDAY AFTERNOON PROJECT:

A rifle through the spares, ordinarily never used again, and I've dished up a lovely synth-puter with five wavetables. It's also an Ejay machine to top off the Blair-era retro.

(Whether this ever-stacking pile gets fully used is another thing though. I've got all that lot to go in the Playstation yet: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=8070&p=94107#p94107 )

I did consider a nice SB16, still having the slot to use one. But I finally plumped for the Live, plus a decent little FM one to match the inbuilt system.
..And topped off with the Creative softsynth and Windows ME sounds. (I think people should use that more because Yamaha did a damn fine job for Bill Gates.)<br />_

So there we go. More period sounds, this time marrying nicely with the SFX Sound Expander or Yamaha DJX 2. I can run sounds off from romplers not directly copyable, and through classic outputs.

Each computer era definitely has its sonic charms.

Making the most of the micro again, as a pretty sturdy Dell from the turn of the century couldn't be a better host for the job. Especially sporting the connections I need for other retro computing.<br />_

Just add MIDI cable and program, then dinner is served. Sadly sans case as the runner's too warped but at least the cardboard's evocative of the '70s.

Once so everyday and now a kind-of relic all its own.

To think I nearly binned all this when it was merely out of date: http://www.concept-single.net/IMG_773.JPG

And to put the cherry on the cake, I also made it a joint Commodore-Amiga-ST server.

All because the DOS bits work under Windows too. People slagged off ME, but because it has the full MS-DOS 8 inbuilt, I can run so many things within it. I can run it all in one place without fiddling and it's more authentic and versatilethan DOSBOX, which ca't even data transfer from the ports.

So I can also juggle emulation, data conversion and porting. Which also means the machine can take over when the real micros are underpowered, or even feed samples from any source into the MSSIAH!
`<br />Now that's what a REAL server's all about!<br />_

...Then after that excitement's died down, I should go back and look at the sound effects bundled with those card drivers.
