Heh. My first Competition Pro had simple contact springs which had to be brushed here an then to ensure proper contact. The second one had micro switches. I broke one spring contact fire button and glued in a microswitch. At least the microswitch version, I was able to play with just fingertips. Maybe you need hands of a certain size for it. I also bought a mini version which could be controlled with just a thumb and hold in one hand. All the other joysticks were crap and broke very easily with games like Decathlon. All of them are still in working condition though the first has a crack in the shell and makes creaking noises when used. The build-in auto-fire feature in the second one was utter crap, though. And I disabled the secondary triangle buttons on the newer version as well because i rest my palm on it and accidentally triggered them.
All is lost.

Cheapest joysticks I had where Kraft joysticks, using nothing but push buttons (even inside for the stick!!!)

Summer Games II's cycling ruined both I had back then.

In the other hand, the best joystick I ever had (and still possess and works) are Wico command control;

Well by and large, crap joysticks were par for the course when playing crappy games. I know I love the 64 but my word, it was an engineering project on its own just to control them nicely. And other systems had exactly the same problems.

Of course there are good sticks as well as good games. But when I compare the controls of the average game now with one of then, I find the improvement is staggering.

Hi there,
I'm just doing a little poll here.

I've been ask by a growing number of members that if I could build an opposite device; USB Joystick to DB9 compatible adapter.

That would enable current gaming joysticks/pads to work with original hardware like ATARI, C64, AMIGA machines.

Just write in this tread if you would be in or out for a product like this.

Thanks!!

Prototype underway. I'll do a spinoff of my existing product. Modifications are required and generating a valid USB signal to be recognized by a USB joystick is pretty puzzling. Good thing I've got that 100MHz, 32 channel Oscilloscope!
I'll post technical stuff later on for interested minds! ;)

Hey Guys! This is it.

I just received the first batch of USB Joystick adapters, PCB version 3.0.
This new version is supporting virtually any DB9 joystick ever made!
Just use the flash utility to reprogram as desired.

Here is the compatibility list:

•Atari 2600 Joystick
•Atari 7800 Joystick (2 buttons)
•Atari analog Paddle (2 controllers)
•Atari video touch pad Keyboard
•Amstrad Joystick
•Amiga Joystick (up to 3 buttons)
•Amiga Mouse (up to 3 buttons)
•Commodore 64 Joystick
•Commodore CD32 Joypad (7 buttons)
•Coleco Vision Controller
•Intellivision Touch pad (16 buttons)
•MSX Joystick
•Sega Genesis Joypad (3 and 6 buttons)
•Sega Master System Joypad (2 buttons)
•3DO Joypad

This new hardware version was designed with compatibility in mind. Every pin is reconfigurable so new firmware can be built to support much more devices.
Design will stay open source so anybody out there can contribute to this quest for retro gaming pleasure!

You can order them directly on the web site at http://www.retronicdesign.com or by sending me a PM request here.

Cheers!

Nitz

For those who still have a ColecoVision controller, the adapter now support it!

I remember the ColecoVision Adam of a friend. Big as an IBM PC but looks like a tapedeck (2 tape drives in the front). It took like forever to load a game! And if you power it off while it was reading a cassette, your cassette has now bad sectors!!! The Adam had a flaw in its power supply that gives a power hit back to the tape head thus erasing the tape beneath it. :hysterical: ...Happy that I had a 1541 with my C64...
