Cheap sample binge

I've been on a bit of a shopping spree, for samples costing the earth just a decade back.

Total cost spent: £7. Virtual stuff gained: Music shop's worth of synths, nice drum kit and respectable strings, with session man quality. And at chip shop prices.

Just five years back I'd have struggled to believe that. I still thought real money would need spending.

Stack 'em high and sell 'em cheap I suppose.

Many are old versions sold as loss leaders and other people do it through love. It makes some professionals whine but computers weren't going to make everybody rich.

I've heard just a demo set on a Computer Music disc and can attest to the quality of even a pared-down one. In this day and age, you're not buying just some sounds but a proper range of virtual kits now. And kits which have to pull out the stops to stay ahead of the quality peanuts ones. (Which, in turn, keep the makers of EZ Drummer fighting to stay top whack!)

I've said it before but I'm truly gobsmacked at the quality these days. I wonder how many people have been tempted off the torrents due to the insane value in going legit!

You can even worry less about the quality. Even quite bad is acceptable these days, for lots of work. And perhaps the most impressive bit of all is that you can take the rest of your pocket money down the charity shop and be assured even an old PC from somebody's attic will do the job of performing this lot!

Talk about absolute value and totally convincing. Home computers have MADE IT.
