Loads of times
I can't give any concrete examples at this time, though: which might (for you) be a crushing blow or a lucky escape

Hmmm. Perhaps in your case, coming to the end of one of my topics could be as good example as any.

And on the subject of that, what do I see here?
More machines bound to end at a sky high price. OK, let's see 'em:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AMAZING-Stude ... 19deab138a
1p starting bid, supposedly fully working.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Teac-X3-Reel- ... 2a2e70b0f7
Something a bit more moderate. Though just the domestic model.
7 hour documentary (to weep through if I don't get a cheap monster one THIS time....):

Or p'raps that spare Amiga. May only be used for a handful of proggies and PC networking but still a help.
Cheap:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Commodore-Ami ... 461093dd9e
Looks good:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vintage-Commo ... 3f26bc5cd3
Pricier but has the hard drive:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Commodore-Ami ... 4d0e22d6ba
Plenty of stuff but a bit yellow:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Amiga1200-Unl ... 4856fdb332
Book and vid:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Amiga-Book-In ... 19cfd560ce
It's never been a better time to look around in a slump. Though you also need your own money.

...Yeah. And not enough for the White Album on tape.
£ 449. Carumba. The others never usually go for more than 50.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/THE-BEATLES-W ... 1e7ca5f1d8
So stuff it, I'll bite the bullet and maintain what I already have.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/5-LITRES-Isop ... 41734a7762
Bloody hell Baldrick, the last tape head in the galaxy will have worn down long before I reach the end of that jug.

Right. The
real business right now.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/16-OSCILLATIN ... c27da#shId
Just the thing to stick at the front door to hurry along that fresh air breezing into the house.
I have this good little aircon and it really makes all the difference, especially together:

But ooo, here's a Nagra. £62 current bid, bloody hell.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Kudelski-Nagr ... 1578408%26
Nice bit of tape to go with it:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Memorex-2400- ... 6116265%26
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vintage-Sixti ... 5770389%26
But oooo, oo, oooooo-oooo, ooo, oooh:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/studer-vintag ... 257fe6af14
Just £175. WELL worth a gamble for those who know what they're doing. Razmo?
And just look at this Braun:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Braun-TG-1000 ... 27d47c4f75
Lennon had a Brennel too. Dunno if this is the same model though:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Brennel-Mk-5- ... 4174baae88
Vintage EMI. Perfect:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/EMI-RE-321-RE ... 3a82ba427a
Manfred Mann tapes:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Manfred-Mann- ... 1c347468d1
Dave Clark Five:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Dave-Clark-Fi ... 1c34748003
Though another avenue is high speed cassette for a quality tape sound. I'd seriously be after this one if the stereo tracks are half width. It's twin speed and has the other goodies on.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 1007788993
SOS on getting a reel-to-reel:
http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/mar10/a ... advice.htm
...And
Oooh.... REEL TO REEL VIDEO RECORDER:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VINTAGE-1970s ... 19def4196a
Remember that 1966 home tech magazine from earlier this topic? And look at how cheap it is.
Great stuff. Nearly forgot I'm still into the Commodore now.

That Studer STILL hasn't had a single bid on it.
And I notice £60's been knocked off this:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/tascam-reel-t ... 2580380a79
Maybe I'll take the plunge. My money's got a lot of calls on it right now.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RARE-AGFA-PE4 ... 3cd3294a81
Though I could just say sod it and buy some interesting tape.
Joblot of 7 unknown grade tapes:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/JOBLOT-OF-SEV ... 43bda7891b
Oooo, chrome:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Reel-to-Reel- ... 3a82e0dbab
Convert your radiogram to a tape deck.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vintage-Gramd ... 20d50a501c
Or '60s man could have just got himself a tiddler....
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1960s-vintage ... 51af085dda
Mastering tape. Hmmmmm:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TDK-SA-35-180 ... 2580242108
OH MY GOD, A TEAC MASTERING DECK......
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TEAC-X-2000M- ... 1e7cfd04a3
And oh my my my my my:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TASCAM-X48-48 ... 5975459%26
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Tascam-DR-07- ... 0984164%26
All within my range. Glad I wasn't so hasty.
...Though if all else fails, why not a tape deck calculator. Done in the Sony style.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RETRO-CALCULA ... 53faad9892
I would have preferred an Akai.

Well that's another tape deck I didn't quite get. Looks like I'll have to go back to toys, somehow turning them into something at least pro looking.....
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PLAYSTATION-2 ... 461111e79d
Though I'll be damned if I'll buy a PC conversion kit for my PS2, though I've got mouse, sequencers and controllers for it.
Atari 2600 samples should go well with mine:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Atari-2600-Sa ... 460eee2fca
...Or this modded phone, which is now a twin XLR mike setup, for some reason:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Modified-Circ ... 257fab5c05
And a disgustingly expensive 'super rare' Mario Bros for the NES is available.........
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MARIO-BROS-AR ... 3a82a8f431
.....Though I also find another, far cheaper copy too.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mario-Bros-Ar ... 27d4643c63
Donkey Kong as well:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DONKEY-KONG-C ... 4611085cc2
And this thing, which still looks like it's encased in the original shop security box. Big price for it too.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Nintendo-Nes- ... 2c6d386c2e
Plus NES in box.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Nintendo-NES- ... 3cd3981347
And ooo, NES controllers.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NINTENDO-NES- ... 5657f4afff
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-RetroLink ... 27d39964af

And extra note to self: find a little dot matrix printer. Inkjets are funky and all but the nozzles always dry hard as I don't use 'em often enough. An Oki or Epson is good as ribbons are still in abundance.
Oh, and hard drives.
That ain't bad. Bloody good actually:

I used to really love the single button joysticks of yore, but I've unfortunately grown accustomed now to the PS2/PS3 gamepad type. Too much Rachet and Clank under the bridge!

Oh I wouldn't say that Chris. Personally I think the more a controller feels like the panel of the boss's spanking new digger, the meatier the experience.
Having dealt with Cheetah joysticks and all that flimsier stuff in the past, I'm more than glad they are back there.
And so , travesty of travesties, I do recommend one of these to use such quality new joypads on the PC:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/For-Sony-PS2- ... 27d311ffda
And I do think I might........
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Asciiware-Arc ... 2a2e306f70
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/20-1-Xbox-joy ... 2a2dbc1750
And I know I linked to something letting me plug a Sony controller into a Commodore or Sega but I just can't see it tonight. All good stuff though.
Though we could just say no more about it and look at this funky Atari going for just £150:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ATARI-MEGA-ST ... 337f2afce1
.... Or the Amiga 2000 at £155 current bid. Bloody hell mate:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Commodore-Ami ... 4d0e70b7d1
Wild '80s quality.
And for something modern, a nice cheap sequencer with effects and stuff:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Multimedia-Mu ... 2a2e0e187f
No Cubase of course but how much quality could you have expected for a fiver just a decade back? Far far less than this apparently delivers. What an age we live in.
...Or a CBM tape backup board for three times more.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/COMMODORE-64- ... 4610efc6a8
Wild man.

.....Oh I remember, I saved that joystick thing to my Facebook page. I've dug it out:
http://www.tototek.com/store/index.php? ... 0obfig1j20
There's another in the range which lets you plug a Sony controller into the SNES.
Plus NES - PC adapter and NES joystick. Heaven on Earth.
1:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NES-Nintendo- ... 460f03d0fa
2:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-BOXED-NES ... 4ab7649d0b
No NES mouse I'm afraid, save for homebrew jobs:
http://www.diylive.net/index.php/2006/0 ... ontroller/
And an interesting Multiface ST. No comparison to the grand old Action Replay however.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Multiface-ST- ... 2ec8c8a429
...Plus a nice little Vestey, in case I change my mind on a harmonium.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vintage-ornat ... 1302143%26
Mmmm, £50 and all those drawbars.
Oooooh-YEAAH.
