REVIEW BY DEADSTONE (15/03/2003)
Dear TAS!
Thanks for Your review, BUT!
I’ve never heard about Glyn R Brown, or that remix64 competition. My Own imagination gave birth to this remix. Original ideas and conception, so DON’T ACCUSE ME OF PLAGIARISING!
Is it flat and emotionless? Maybe…
Headstone, the Arranger of Sacred Armour Of Antiriad
okay.. one comment:
dear headstone,
wrong place and wrong style to place SUCH a message....

Another point is that some people seem to be writing reviews just to see their nickname appear on R64, or how do you see this:
-----------------------
Cauldron II - I am a Pumpkin Man - arranged by trauma
REVIEW BY HBASM (28/02/2003)
[...]
The nostalgic impression doesn't exist for me, because I don't relate this sound to the C64, and I haven't played the game.
-----------------------
If someone DOES NOT KNOW the original SID, how can he dare to write
a review on a remix of it?

@Neil: There are surely websites where people can review music unknown to them, like the latest Britney Spears track or something like this. I think this R64-site is not the place to release some hot air, or what? A reviewer should have some better C64-relation, like LaLa or Michael Schwendt or in general: a scener, not just some "I dropped in and write reviews"-guy.

i understand where your coming from pal. but who's to say that this guy hasn't been following the scene in the background for sometime.
the music at rko and c64 related site isn't just for the sceners to enjoy, the chap has a right to listen to this music and to comment on it if he feels.
yep, he could go to websites where the music is unknown to him, but maybe he's quite taken bny the sounds of the c64, it would be unfair to say to people you can't review a piece of music cos your not an active part of the scene.
because the music is based on the c64, doesn't mean you can't look at it as a piece of muisc rather than a remix. i think you get an unbiased view when you don't know the original tune.
I won't limit r64 to a specialised group of people, people who stumble upon the scene with no prior knowledge of it, should be welcomed and not alienated.

Neil--i agree that you don't need to know the original. For instance, I love TDG's Judge Dredd cover, but had only heard the original years and years ago and had totally forgotten about it (I didn't even recognise it).
However, such reviews still need to be constructive. There's little point in saying stuff like "I can't really comment on this, because I don't know the original", which has appeared a couple of times now.
If it hasn't already happened, I would _strongly_ recommend moving the guidelines to above the review box, so they are totally in your face, rather than something a few people might notice if they scroll the window.

Personally, I don't really care what the original sounds like. I go to RKO to listen to good music, not good remixes... That's what has kept me back from writing reviews so far; The fact that I wouldn't review them as remixes probably but as individual pieces of music (which they still are in some aspects)...
Were I to start reviewing I would surely listen to the original SID before reviewing but it probably wouldn't have an effect on the ouput...

yep, you're right larsec, that's exactly the same reasonLarsec wrote:... That's what has kept me back from writing reviews so far; The fact that I wouldn't review them as remixes probably but as individual pieces of music (which they still are in some aspects)...
why i don't write reviews....

I've sobered up my act. However, I believe rating the music as Music is just as justified as reviewing it base on how it relates to the original sid. Lala, for instance, has a very orthodox view on when a remix is bad (when it departs from the original) and likes short tunes. I am happy to hear interesting interpretations, yes complete rewrites, and like long songs. Both opinions can coexist can't they?2Klang wrote:yep, you're right larsec, that's exactly the same reasonLarsec wrote:... Are you sure your reluctance to review isn't founded in you yourself being an active musician as well? I mean one should not throw stones when one lives in a green house
