I got tinnitus in December during a head cold. Started with one ear, then the other one went a couple months later. Luckily (or maybe not) I only really notice it when I go to bed. I keep a fan on for white noise to try and drown it out.
I'm pretty sure playing drums in a drum corps for 3 years was the main culprit. Now I try to tell the kids that are in it to wear ear plugs, but of course it isn't the cool thing to do.
Anyway, one tip is that the severity of tinnitus can be sort of controlled through diet. Basically staying a way from sugar can reduce it quite a bit.
