I just received a nifty Sanxion loader remix from Vinny Mainolfi. It was made by a guy called Stuart Breedon who's not really familiar with the C64 remix scene. Tis coolio - listen to it with your EARS!

Unforuntately, I do not have a trained ear and so I don't really know what you mean by "muddy mastering". Any chance of letting this lamer know what you mean?
I LOVE the remix, hence emailing it to Kenz for his opinion. Stuart really has no idea about the C64 remix scene and just created this tune for his own enjoyment!
Thanks for linking it here Kenz

Yes this is nice but muddy as tas says.
Muddy = much bass and not so much treble and stuff, right?

Well, the beginning was very promising, I really got goose bumps! Great!
But I'm quite disappointed that the song itself is mainly sid+drums+some extra instruments layered above - he passed up the opportunity to create a real epic! And some of the best parts are missing.
The muddy sound does the rest (but it's due to the much too low bitrate - 64 kbps/22 kHz/stereo is not adequate).

As I said, Stuart only did this for his own enjoyment and doesn't yet know that I asked Kenz to post it here. I am not sure of his musical ability and so you may be over-estimating him. I doubt he was trying to create a "true epic" and that he may need a little more time to meet your exact and expected needs.
He has only just started and so a little encoragement would be appreciated
Many Thanks.

For a first effort, this is pretty spectacular imho.
I doubt many here have created a mix any better for their first go. Ask him to give you a high bitrate version, i would love to hear a cleaner version of it.
As for sid+beats+layered instruments i don't see it as a problem at least with the way it's been utilised, infact in this instance i think it's worked extremely well. The only problem i have with it, is that it sounds muddy cos of the low bit-rate.
I think he's done a grand job.

Stay tuned ... Kenz originally asked me for the high bitrate version. Unforunately, Stuart is at work and I doubt he will be able to provide the clearer version until later tonight. It's my fault that the version you have isn't too clean, as I asked Stuart to send the file smaller than 2mb - sorry.
Thanks for the comments tho. I am sure Stuart will be well chuffed.
Hopefully, Stuart will log on and register later and give you the low-down on how the tune was constructed

IMO all these issues do not really count. And my "exact needs" aren't the topic either. It's just that this remix really starts ingeniuos - I couldn't even imagine a better beginning for this song - and then it gets somehow average IMHO.

What do you mean by "just started"? I'm pretty sure he doesn't make music for the first time, does he? But if I'm wrong, this is in fact brilliant!
Never mind!

... just started in C64 remixes (it may be his only one!)
To be honest with you, he used to be my next door neighbour MANY moons ago, and emailed me with the tune to see if I could guess what it was. I think he had no idea it was going to be THAT easy to guess
I do understand your comments Romeo, and thank you for your honest opinion, which is very much appreciated - thanks.
I will comment no further with regards to Stuart's work and abilities, and I will leave it up to him to discuss with you.

Thanks to Vinny for sending this in and thanks for the feedback.
Just a few things, Yes I have never done a C64 remix before. I don't have a state of the art set-up, only a computer and 2 keyboards. The bass is a little too loud due to the bitsize - I have sent in a better version of it. The program I use to record and sequence is Acid Pro 4 and Sound Forge. And lastly, yes, I didn't know anything about C64 remix websites and this remix was done purely for fun and for the love of the game.
Thanks also to the master Rob Hubbard
I'm open to any other questions about the tune.

I'll be out for the rest of the evening but I will answer the questions asap.
Should I take out the C64 track altogether? The piece was supposed to be a C64 vs 2004 remix. So I would start with the original track, then start adding more elements over the top to bring it up to date.
PS I agree that the opening is good and then it slackens off for the main part. Another thing is that I couldn't be bothered to learn to play the middle segment of the tune ( although I will at a later date ).

@midian:
Is there a slight possibility to draw you on the dark side of c64 remixing?
This version of sanxion is very promising.
