I've just coined a new phrase... "It's OK but it's not RKO"

Nice one, Andrew. Allow me to coin the derivative "It's OK, but it's not RK-Okay."
Mind you, "RK-OK" sounds like R2-D2's distant cousin.

life can be so great [and opinions differ]
Hi there,
This is an automated message to inform you that the 'starpaws' mp3 you
recently uploaded to Remix.Kwed.Org has been removed from the submission queue.
Remix.Kwed.Org employs a jury system which allows selected Remix64 members to
vote for the tunes while they're queued. Included below you'll find their votes
and/or comments for your upload.
RATING - COMMENT
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
bad - Oh god! Please forgive him!
bad - Wrong in every sense of the word
bad - This could well get my vote as the worst remix of 2005. It's
utterly horrible. Tons of the SID, bad drums and distortion
don't work, and there's no respect for the original tune.
Utterly utterly clag.
poor - How not to do SID+DRUMS
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Overall score: 20.8% by 4 voters.

Please bear in mind that having a submitted track rejected for public
consumption at R:K:O is neither the end of the world nor implying that your
work lacks talent. Feel free to make the tune available elsewhere and point the
C64 remix community (and the rest of the world) to it.

Tons of the SID, bad drums and distortion don't work,
Well, this is the old issue with too much SID-samples with drums. This is how I experienced your remix - basically like the original was just topped with a drumlayer.
I feel sorry for you as this is surely a bit depressing when your remix takes so much flak.
Try to avoid this "SIDs with drum"-approach as it takes a hell of experience to make it sound good
and it justifies itself as remix rather than remake.
Please bear in mind that having a submitted track rejected for public consumption at R:K:O is neither the end of the world nor implying that your work lacks talent.
This is to be taken literally. Avoid being at a dead end with your approach, take another deep breath and try another angle.

I thought that the additional one-voice instrumental bass-type track was what did the damage, since it's wrong harmonically in many places and is just painful in others. I did quite like the middle of the remix, though the distorted drums were too much for my ears. I've a sneaking suspicion that this one-voice track was put over the top without having learnt the song, since it disappears entirely during the difficult chord bits. Which, actually, when it's just SID + drums doesn't sound too bad, thanks to the strength of the original SID.

thanks for your construtive comments, that helps me understand the judgement more. i guess my ears are just a bit more trimmed to distorted sounds. that disappearing @ the difficult chord part is deliberate - actually this was the part where i thought it's a bit too much for my ears and would sound better when it's triggered rythmically. after listening to the remix on various speakers i must say that the mastering overall could have been done better. it sounds too thin and the sid track comes in sharp as a razorblade.

After you have listened to your own tune for the unth time, you think it sounds like it should, thats when you release it for some feedback

It's listenable IMO, but (and it breaks my heart to say this) not much more.
Being a subpar mixer m'self, I can say that SID & Drums = No-no.
I use the medium of Skale, a Windows Tracker program for most of my mixing these days.
