I haven't made any music ever with C64 so I'm not sure how it goes but my guess would be that the SID-chip needs some parameters to make a sound?

What I'd like is to be able to get certain sounds from .sid files and play them with MIDI-keyboard.

Is that possible with PC?
What kind of hardware and software would I be needing?
I could imagine HardSID and a VST-plugin could do the job but I suppose there isn't a such plugin?
SidStation is way too expensive but I guess it could be the last resort, though I'm not sure if even that can do the job.

yes, it`s possible to rip some sounds from sid files.
just mute the channels u don`t wanna hear, in the sidplayer. then export the tune as wav. open the wav in your sample editor u like and crop it.
use any vst sampler to load it, map it and play the sound rip.

anyway, it would/could be much easier to load the vst plugin "unknown 64" in your sequencer host. if u know what u are doing, u can get the whole spectrum sounds of a real sid chip, me thinks.
another vst plug is quadrasid from refx.

That way I'd get all the effects with the sample if any were used.

I've tried quadrasid out. The sound was too modern and I wasn't able to load anything from .sid files.

I tried Unknown 64 out. I couldn't find anything where to load .sid files so I guess it isn't possible with this one either.

these plux aren`t meant to play sid files.but a good idea, actually, to sync a sid tune via vst plugin to the host. perhaps m. schwendt could do this.

if you know how to program those plux, u can create the same sound u desired as in the sidfile.
at least that`s what i think.
the hard side on it, is to know how to patch.

for the export of wavs: i can easylie rip the bass, fx, leads and so on from a sid tune like descriped before.all i need is a one channel export of each 4 voices. all u have to do is to trim/crop the files and so on.
no big deal after all.

The Harsid will do exactly what you are asking via the free Hardsid Midi software it uses. You can load in a .sid file and the software will display each sid channel on screen. You than have to do a bit of searching to find the sound you want. Once you find it, you can save it as a patch and play it via the Hardsid soundcard in any music application that supports midi.

What do you mean with the "searching of a sound"? You mean checking out .sids to find a certain sound or something like that?

Last I knew, Chris Abbot @ c64audio.com had a bunch of Hardsids to sell. If you want to get one, that will be the quicker route if you are UK based (IF he still has any)
