Anyone else got the "SpywareStrike 2.5"-virus?

This is a program that installed itself one day, constantly remembering me that I should buy it (that's pretty much insulting my intellect, in my opinion). Can't uninstall it, can't remove it with Ad-Aware, can't SpyBot it, can't Hijackthis, can't nothing, it keeps installing itself over and over.
Someone said the easiest solution would actually be formatting the harddrives and reinstall Windows XP.
Unfortunately I don't have the Windows XP installation-cd's AND a virus blocked out my dvd-players(*).
What to do, what to do...?
(*)Also a funny story, the only time for as far as I can remember I download warez, and just that very program has to be loaded with virus! Gheh

Microsoft Anti-Spyware (beta) is also supposed to get rid of it. Amazingly for an M$ product, it's not bad.

Did you remember to disable system restore when you used the removal tool?
Also I think Norton recycle bin holds onto files that you don't necessarily want, too...

Oh, and if you can, avoid Internet Explorer like the plague. Switch to Mozilla Firefox 1.5.0.1 now - it'll be the best thing you've ever done, believe me.

To disable system restore, goto your desktop, right click on "My Computer" and choose "Properties". Select the "System Restore" tab and tick the box that says "Turn off System Restore on all drives". Then proceed and see if you can remove the fucker!

...however unfortunately nothing helps against "Winfixer", a really disturbing Popup that even occours on Firefox. If you don't have a good firewall (I'm using Sygate Firewall 5.5 Pro) and clicking inadvertently on "Yes" the programm download and installs iself without request and you'll have a long way to fix this unwanted tool making the PC much slower (and who needs this programm if you're using Norton Utilities???)
It's a great shame that very old and big Emulation sites like
http://www.vg-network.com support such assholes (sorry for this expression) to finance itself, so I check
http://www.emulator-zone.com instead now.

It used to occasionally popup on PCs with old 1.0 releases until I made the following change in about:config:
privacy.popups.disable_from_plugins - set this to 2.
1.5.0.1 seems to set the above by default, which is nice.
