Downloading royalty free music

Hi all.
Just been told that we are not allowed to play copyrighted music @ work for our 'caller on hold' system (and rightly so, I guess)...
I opened my big gob and said that there is plenty of royalty free music on the net for download, and so have now been assigned to get a Cd's worth (damn)!
Well, finding free music isn't as easy as I thought it might be, some places charging anything from £10 - £30 PER TRACK
!
My question is this: anyone know of a place where I can just download some FREE royalty free tracks?
Is there such a thing as truly free music available anywhere? Maybe I could raid the R64 remixes and have them on our phone system?
Thanks in advance.

A friend of mine downloaded some royalty-free stuff from iTunes for a Flash application he was working on...

Just put X-Formz's Blood Valley on there....if the client is still on the phone after hearing that, then it's a REALLY important call

This is where i think the copyright laws are over zealous! Sometimes i think the music industry should say "lets call this an even gate!" some thing.
LOL, maybe i should say something to my workplace as they have an ipod stiched up to their caller waiting!

@ tonka: you can cover a classical music, most of them are in public domain.

Thanks all.
The 'Creative Commons' thing looked very interesting, but I couldn't find any downloads there. Maybe I'm just being a dumb-ass (probability 99.9%)!
Looks like the easiest way to go is via classical music anyway (thanks Gibs), although I do think that the actual *recording* itself will still be copyright protected(?)...
That said, I doubt anyone can really tell one orchestra from another, so who's gonna know right?!...

You could use Scott Joplin recordings from the 1920s for that China Miner feel
Seriously, you can have my permission to play Crystal Dreamscapes on continuous loop
