How to output C64 images to Video or Individual Frames?

Post by Analog-X64 »

Is there a way to output the video of C64 Emulator into a Video File or individual frames?

I was thinking of using a third party software to capture the output of the video emulator into a video file.

I thought maybe I should check here before I go in that direction.

You can dump .avi by using WinVice or any Vice-clone. I used that for the Visa Röster International Karate-video. ( http://www.livet.se/visa )

Press Play On Tape used Vice + screen capture program, but I cannot remember which one it was.

i think they're using winvice at http://www.c64-longplays.de/, too.
maybe you need to install additional codecs from the winvice-page to be able to export as avi...

And if you wanted to do it frame by frame, you could use CCS64. Just press ALT-P to pause emulation. From here you can use a combination of using one of the screen-grab commands (ALT-F2 I think is the one I use most), then pressing "N" to go to the next frame. That would get you a truck-load of BMPs. I used this to get a nice hi-res grab of some clips I used in the Robot Video I did.

Awesome tips!!! :) will use them wisely.

Mahoney: What video production package was used for Visa Röster International Karate-video? I like the little trick of the Character running around on stage.

Boz: That Robot Video is one of my favourites.

Also the Comic Bakery video was kick a$$ with that break beat sequence in the middle which was part of it was done in 3D, lots of work there.

Sony Vegas Video. Press Play on Tape uses that one, too.

The International Karate-men in the Visa Röster video were done by changing the International Karate game by erasing all the background graphics (requires a lot of C64 assembly knowledge, though...!) and then using the yellow background as a mask for the overlay into the DV footage. It worked much better than I originally thought it would! :D

Good luck, Analog-X!

Thats a great idea :) I'm not an assembly wizard, but I was pretty good with Monitors and Hex Editing in those days. :)

I worked out a deal with the company I work for and starting next week I will work 1 week in the U.S.A and fly back home and stay home for 1 week. Which means I can have a bit of time to myself for some project ideas I've had since last year.

I still need to order a USB Midi Keyboard Controller.
