We came back from our unplanned hiatus last weekend at the JyrkkÃƒÂ¤ 2006 festival in PudasjÃƒÂ¤rvi, Finland. Check out this video clip shot by an audience member during our performance. Recognise the tune?

Those are the ones, yep. The former is properly called "Bugler's Dream" and was composed by LÃƒÂ©o Arnaud. I thought until very recently that the latter was an original piece by whoever coded the music for Summer Games, but now I've learned that it's actually "Rondeau" from a suite by another French composer, Jean-Joseph Mouret.

I always really enjoyed listening to the world records theme and was delighted when I discovered that it can be played on a diatonic harmonica. I also really liked the effect that hearing the tune and seeing the little guy run onto the screen with his torch had on the audience, with people bursting into spontaneus laughter and applause - it was one of the high points of the gig for me.

Oh, don't you give me any of that, you...you...

No, seriously though, I think the piece works better on the harmonica when slowed down a bit, it lends a nice folksy touch in my opinion. We speed the tune up a little when I switch to the keyboards and the rest of the band begins to join in, but the video cuts off before that.
