Microsoft Uses Audiowarez?
Current mood: awake

A quick example of how software pirates can get caught,

- If you're an XP user, find your way to:
C:..WINDOWS..Help..Tours..WindowsMediaPlayer..Audio..Wav

- Now open Notepad.

- Drag and drop one of the smaller wav. files into Notepad.

- Scroll to the bottom of the document...

You'll find:

"2000-04-06 IENG Deepz0ne ISFT Sound Forge 4.5"

What does that mean?
Well, it means that Microsoft's team used Sound Forge 4.5. Fair enough...

But what is Deepz0ne?
Deepz0ne was one of the software crackers from Radium, a group that specialized in cracking/distributing pirated audio software in the late 90's and early 00's.

There's a possibility that one of the freelance artists hired by MS was responsible, but it's highly unlikely. Usually when you do composing or sound design for anything of this sort, you submit uncompressed audio and let them do the tweaking when they put the software/DVD/game/etc together.

So essentially what that means is Microsoft can spend hundreds of millions on anti-piracy campagns and counter-measures, but not $149.99 for software to compress their own tutorial wavs.

Oh and iHeads, don't get all giggly...Apple has done much much worse...but we'll save that for my bantering that actually gets printed. :-)

Oh my, first the boss of the RIAA gets caught short, now the great foundation of MS itself !! can we say "counterclaim" or if there is such a thing "counterproof" as in "they do it too"... how on earth would that stand in court ? the mind boggles...

I don't think Gates has ever made any bones about downloading media. I could swear there was a thing about him downloading telly or something.

It's not that he does it, that's fair play - don't want to be a hypocrite. It's that the pukes at the RIAA do nothing. That pisses me off.
