Want to hear how a 24db SID filter sounds? :O)

Post by Razmo »

yes... the SID is normaly a 12db per oktave analog filter... I know that... but:

I've been constructing the MIDI Box SID V2 electronics that controls two SIDs from a single PIC microprocessor.

I decided to try and route one SIDs output into the other's input... this way I get two cascaded 12db SID filters, and as long as both filters get the same parameters, it in essence works like a 24db filter :)

I'm having plans on routing the output of the second SIDs output back into first SIDs input again with a potmeter in between... which will allow for feedback.

I got rather surprised actually that the sound of two SIDs joining forces sound so smooth and creamy! ... really nice sound.

Check an MP3 here, where the initial sequener bass sound is two SIDs doin' their stuff just for you! 8) ... I've added delay and reverb to give it some ambience, and added a kick and effect as well (not SID).

As I'm doing an adaption for SoundDiver of this MIDI Box SID V2 synthesizer, here are some screenshots:

Image
The V2 has support for two SIDs... this picture shows only one of them. Notice that every seperate SID oscillator has it's own arpeggiator, totaly independent of each other :) .. imagine what this will sound like with different patterns playing on each oscillator and sync+ringmod involved

Image
Here is one of the two multistage envelopes for whatever purpose you might think up in the modulation matrix... also the raw filter parameters can be seen, and some of you might recognise the parameters

Image
Here are the six (yes six!) LFOs of the engine... makes it possible to allocate one LFO exclusively to each of the six SID voices, though they may be used any way you like in the modulationb matrix 8)

Image
The modulation Matrix... and as this is a stereo SID synth, it has the ability to give two sources and destinations in each slot, and even flip the phase in either side of the modulation signal... really powerful as it will perform mathematical calculations between the two sources :)

I've not yet finished the editor... I'm still missing the four (four!) wavetable generators that will allow you to create those special SID drums etc. and also something called a "Trigger Matrix"...

This is just the "Lead Engine"... the synth has four different engines that can be chosen which are: Lead Engine, Bassline Engine (303 style), Multi Engine (seperate 6 voice polyphonic playing of 6 SID oscillators) and the Drum Engine... all have special parameters for making things easy, so I'm up for a bit of planning as each engine holds 256 parameter bytes :?

Anyways, a rather potent SID synth that I see has no real rival out there

Oh yes... and it supports up to 8 SIDs...

Great work Razmo!! Excellent stuff.... and you answered my question about 8 SID Support. :) I'm building the 8 Sid Version.

ANX:

Yes the engine support 4 microprocessors each controlling two SIDs.

This gives you 4 simultaneous engines available in any configuration you want.

The setup is controlled by an "Ensemble" that is sort of like a 4 part multitimbral "multi setup".

The synth will also sport a "Super Poly" mode, where 8 SIDs will be considered as 8 full voices being playable polyphonically (If I understand Thorsten's explanation correctly). This will give kickass to the Oberheim Matrix 6/1000 analog synths out there 8)

This synth just simply rocks! ... I'll be building an 8-out CV option for it as well, so that the engine can control external analog sound modules as well... that way you could connect e.g. an analog VCA to the SIDs output, and control the VCA with the engines modulations (envelopes, LFOs etc.)... with this you could overcome the SIDs own buggy VCA envelopes, or you could route it through different analog filters like SSM, CEM, WASP, MOOG etc...

Thorsten said it can even send out pitch and gate as well, so that it can control any analog synthesizer you could think of with a CV gate and pitch input.

This box has some nifty potential... in not so long, a module PCB for building your own SSM filter will be available, and I'm going to build this I think. the SSM was the filter chip used in e.g. Korg Mono/Poly, Korg Poly6, Roland SH101 and the Waldorf PPG :)

Another little demo of two SIDs in stereo... no 24db filter here, only 12db...
Delay and reverb added.
