Spam filter thingie...
When posting, is it possible and more secure against advertise posts and such to add that you need to type a random number in a box that shows in a image before you can post?
Re: Spam filter thingie...
Yea, there has been Lots of spam in the last 30 minutes.
phpbb is a bit rubbish at detecting bots.

I run vBulletin which cost me $180 U.S. and even the Image Cappta has been compromised by Spam.
I basically review every single member that joins and many of the Forum topics are Member only so, Spiders and Bots can get to them.

Interesting, I move from phpBB to SMF and I now hardly have any bots signing up, I seriously can't remember when the last one was.Analog-X64 wrote:I run vBulletin which cost me $180 U.S. and even the Image Cappta has been compromised by Spam.

And if it weren't bad enough with bots, there are plenty of people operating from India, Pakistan, China, etc. who have actually a job to spam in forums. They get in where no bots can go.
All is lost.

What Vosla said is true.
I'm also blocking ip ranges from country's like India, China. We dont have any members from those country's.
Students and other people are hired for very cheap labour to manually spam sites. I keep having to change my webmaster e-mail address.

Re: Spam filter thingie...
We're using a captcha on registering, and a blacklist check. If those weren't in operation, I assume the situation would be far worse.
I also think that manual hired spammers are the problem here. Not much to be done about it xcept deleting them or adding a manual review and activation. Problem is both methods require manual intervention :/
I thought about putting scene related questions in the sign up process, like:
"Who is god? Rob... (please complete)"
But then again that would be another pesky phpbb hack.

We're trying to delete the spammers as soon as they arrive, but if we miss an occasional one, just howl for us and we'll sort it...

Ok, just kidding.
I keep reporting when I see obvious spam. Not only posts but also new member registrations with certain patterns and homepages set to things like fake rolex sites and the lot...
All is lost.
Re: Spam filter thingie...
Not that I'm familiar with setting up these kinds of forums, but wouldn't it be enough to just change the names of the input fields on the registration page? I.e. <input type="text" name="username" blah blah> becomes <input type="text" name="yourusernamedamnit" blah blah>? (and of course do the same changes on the receiving page)

It would also be nice to see the 'add it to my next playlist' self plugging comments removed in the comment shoutbox.
