I saw a BBC tv programme on the subject and it also said that with current computer and production technology, making a gold bar would be grotesquely more expensive than just buying a real one. Not to mention the fact that you'll die before even a decent fraction of the bar gets made. But it's certainly a start and other boffins are having fun with gold:

Still, the 'invisibility cloak' to hide gold could come in handy should some future Gordon Brown decide to sell off most of our remaining gold stocks at flea market prices again.
