Scientists know how to turn base metal into gold:

I saw a BBC tv programme on the subject and it also said that with current computer and production technology, making a gold bar would be grotesquely more expensive than just buying a real one. Not to mention the fact that you'll die before even a decent fraction of the bar gets made. But it's certainly a start and other boffins are having fun with gold:

Still, the 'invisibility cloak' to hide gold could come in handy should some future Gordon Brown decide to sell off most of our remaining gold stocks at flea market prices again.

Interesting articles!

The way I read it though, they're making tiny crystaline strucutres out of gold, not turning other materials into gold.

I'm sure it was an episode of Tomorrow's World I saw in which they said scientists could MAKE gold by altering the molecules, or atoms or whatever they are. They said something along the lines of changing the shape and size of each one in turn gives you the gold.

Well not bad, whatever it is. I liked it anyway. Kind of a holy grail thing, like the Titanic is for all those ghouls wanting to climb into a submarine and get married on its decks.
