I am very new to MIDI interfacing, wondering if you could suggest a place to go for advice on setting up my old c64 to control a drum synth and keyboard that both have MIDI on them. I acquired a JMS MIDI interface looks like a direct copy of the seil,

Wondering if anyone knows of any software compatible with the unit pictured above or the best route suggestion to take.

Thanks and sorry for such a basic thing to this advanced board. Any direction is appreciated.

Thanks

That's a great looking MIDI box there.

Anyway, what kind of MIDI task are you after doing? If you want a straightforward sequencing package, try these:

GEOMIDI - http://www.dustybin.org.uk/GEOMIDI.D64

SONUS SUPER SEQUENCER - http://homepage.ntlworld.com/michael.braisher/SUPER.D64
(plus magazine review: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/michael.braisher/Sonus.jpg)

If you want to use your Commodore as a playable MIDI instrument then try these:

M64 - http://c64music.blogspot.com/2005/08/m6 ... odule.html (plus quickstart: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/michael.br ... kstart.txt)

MY MIDI - http://homepage.ntlworld.com/michael.br ... MYMIDI.D64

If you want to compose your tunes on a stave then output the MIDI, then use the ADVANCED MUSIC SYSTEM:

http://www.leftiness.org/AMS.htm

If you'd prefer the Commodore to do the donkey work at the composition stage then use INSTANT MUSIC:

http://www.dustybin.org.uk/IM.htm

There. That should fix you. There are stacks and stacks of Commodore links and uploads available from my pages here: http://www.dustybin.org.uk

Your MIDI cartridge may or may not be compatible with the programs listed. Have a go and see.

And here's a Commodore-utilised MIDI piece I prepared earlier...

WILLIAM TELL OVERTURE for Commodore 64 and its SFX Sound Expander -

If you need anything else, just ring.

Did somebody mention before that you are completely and utterly mad, Commie_User?

But in a very positive way. I'm proud of you. Keep on.

I knew Commie_user would come through with his expertise in all things Midi and the C64.

Great info, I appreciated the enthusiasm.

Umm, thanks.

I like to actually use my Commies to the full, so I throw myself into machines which can still do things even my PC can't. Other people put their effort into making their computers look more like the Knight Rider car for people to coo over on Youtube, which I think is a touch of a sideshow.

Still, I get your point. I bought two extra Music Maker playalong albums and am trying to scour the web for extra copies to download. I'm 'blocked' from using my mint condition copies because it would mean removing the original cellophane wrapping. For me it would be like opening those wine bottles they brought up from the Titanic!

(So, if anyone knows of a link to Popular Classics I'd be very grateful!)
