You'll find the C64 BitLive-demo, together with full source code at

It's a "mega demo" with 13 parts, using 62kB of the C64 memory!
And, by the way: Was it BitLive 4 or 5? I thought it was number 4, but somebody said number 4 was BitLive Germany... Anyway, the demo is called "BitLive 4 demo" - but maybe it should read 5 instead...
Whatever the case, I had a great time there. Nice meeting you all, and for those I didn't get the chance to talk to, see you another time!

btw, nice to meet ya pal and thanks again for helping us out with the vocals for v2 CD, you was a life saver

Apologies for making people deaf when this demo started on the stage - unfortunately Uffe had to start it with normal Media Player and without thinking I dragged the volume bar up to the top (force of habit!).
I hope people still have their ears working!

It was a real attention grabber at the high volume, took me back to bitlive 1 when the "real sid" tune I think from Green Beret accidentally got played, causing everyone on the dance floor to go into a trance like state.

4 was germany (Dr.Futur's event) - This one was 5 - however, Chrs says just to call it "Bitlive Brighton 2003". Nice demo Pex, i was wondering - just HOW did you get those sprites to stretch so smoothly ? !! Top Demo

Methinks by changing the vertical positions of the sprites on every rasterline. Amazing that we still end up wondering "how did he do that?" about C64 demos after all these years, it was a very nice piece of code.

This effect (that I didn't know of back in 1988), is done by expanding the sprites. Normally, you can only do it to the double size of the sprite, but if you first "don't expand the sprites" (write #$00 to $d017), and then, directly on the same rasterline expand the sprites (write #$ff to $d017), then you can expand them forever.
And, if you do this separately for all the sprites (write anything else than #$ff to $d017), you can expand them individually. That's how it's done!
If you plan to do it "very large", then you'd have to worry about calculation time as well. I'm actually calculating the stretching for the next screen while displaying the current one, and keeping timing for removing the border. It's hard, but it was fun!

.... i get the same thing when working on my game ... i learn a new trick then have to apply it to like 80 maps - very frustrating for the ppl waiting for it to be released lol...

Ya know what .... with no internet, and living in a small villiage with just a coimputer games shop and no outside user group - i totally missed the 64 demo scene. would love some1 to do a "kenz" and shove all the best ones onto viewable DVD (not data files for an emulator).... Same for the amiga. I did this for video a long time back while my amiga 500 was still alive - loads of scene art n stuff, but the color bleed is awful and CD-R/DVD wasnt around in those days.
Just wanna watch em all again - glitchless.... on a standard DVD Video player .... with a goddamn kickass menu sorted by group or year
