Coming off the back of that, there was a budget digital 8-track called the D-80. It was a big deal in the '90s, though it only used domestic line-level I/O and wasn't terribly special by today's standards - its analogue output quality was worse than many cheap CD players. But it recorded well and allowed you to backup to ADAT or the new CD recorders out. Worked for me.
Like the C64 and Amiga, it was a significant step up for those wanting a good domestic quality studio.
Just thought I'd say that. I had its successor, the D-90, and there was little to match it as PCs just weren't that powerful and anything else was too expensive.

Yeah. I never recorded so much as SID-fart with it. Back then I merely bought one just to have one and it was my mates from work I recorded until I thought I'd tinker with my own music years later.
Oh the joys of having your first job and money to spend. (Though I did find a way of using my Philips 870 CD recorder as a twin track, before the 8-track days, bouncing from CD-RW to CD-RW. I quite like the way I did it - a backing track would be recorded to one disc and played back into the mixer from my DVD player. The lads would sing and play along and both signals would record to a second disc. Then we'd go round and round until the song was done.
The Beatles did that kind of thing on tape before 4-track! Though EMI were clever enough to keep all the recordings instead of wiping them each time before the final dub. I can't remix because I had to finalise the CD-RWs before the DVD player could take them. And for some reason I didn't have the idea to copy them to the PC as I went along.)
Nice little story. The kids of today don't have those learning curves as it's direct-to-notebook stuff from the outset!
