I remember seeing that sort of thing on the Amiga and demos when the Pentium was new. Of course those packages would have run expensive or would have been possible only with a crack demo programmer.
(And I could even say I've seen Commodore Zone demos incorporate a water design, just to be cantankerous. Though obviously it wouldn't have looked as photo-realistic as today's efforts.)
It's amazing what you can bash out with domestic-level software now. For music, sequencer programs pack in such advanced features, but without the 'lab'-type interfaces, that studio pros are known to bitch and whine big time. You only need the talent now.
