Hi,
Big fan of your C64 Music knowledge and had a Midi Related Question for you.
How do you get midi to work with the SFX Sound Expander and Datel Midi Interface. Any Setup info will be greatly appreciated,
Thanks.
I'm here to help!

Thank you. Always glad to help out and hand stuff down from this dusty attic.
I didn't think anyone else still used the Sound Expander. And to my knowledge this 1987 version is the last download left, so guard my copy well.
LOAD "*",8:LOAD
At the first menu hit F3 to boot into the editor. When loaded, hit F7 to select the first option. Use F1 and F3 to scroll the marker up and down the menu. Move to the relevant MIDI option and select. When it highlights white, move up and down to select the MIDI channel you want to send or receive on.
The SFX and SID in harmony.
This option lets you send MIDI in or out in realtime. The Composer options are a little more complex but may be more rewarding.
If it doesn't work then there's either a technical problem or the MIDI cart just isn't compatible after all. In which case take a sample.
Let me know how you get on and I'd love to hear an MP3 of your next work.
Which MIDI interfaces work with the SFX Sound Expander?
Thanks
Marshall

Only the Datel from my experience. Passport and Sonus cartridges fail. You're just going to have to spend your money until you succeed, as I did to stick with hardware.
Too much Sound Expander stuff tends to be what I wrote, which doesn't help me for something new.
Unless you hit the Ebay jackpot, I would take a sample if I were you. Kontakt Player or UVI Workstation make a great free job at handling samples. But I do know the joy at doing it 'properly' though. I paid more than I should have just for a MIDINES.

Thanks for the prompt reply!
So, I'm on the lookout for a working Datel MIDI interface for the C64, anyone got a working one to sell or can point me towards the schematics?
I've got some other ideas on how to use this cart, but if you were to do something new, what features would you like to see implemented?

I like to be early but it was simple luck this time. I just happened to log in after a long time so soon after your question.
Good luck on making your own, though the SFX's MIDI functions seemingly feature only MIDI notes on/off. With MIDI carts so thin on the ground now, maybe it's an idea. Particularly if you make one with fancy connections like tape sync, etc.

I've seen that link, thanks anyway. Most C64 MIDI interfaces use a 6580 but appear at different addresses.
Does anyone have details of the addresses for each type of MIDI interface? I thought I saw a posting on here showing Datel locations but can't find it now.
