Internet-ready C64s - just for the sake of it or what?

I know you can have Twitter on the Spectrum.
But what can you actually do with the C64 online? Not even this guy knows: http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/classi ... ore-64/182
It's great to do these things on our favourite computers. I enjoyed testing photo graphics, sampled sounds and PC networking. The Commie's truly indispensable in the studio. But I just can't fathom any benefits from these new modems which you can't have with the old ones when moving from BBS to HTML.
