Just shared this on Facebook... just occasionally something comes along which really deserves the word "awesome".
Won't somebody PLEASE think of the children?

Sounds like Bowie as well.
And it's funny to note how Space has been reflected in popular culture, from cause of politico-religious controversy to big black thing of mystery, to place of adventure and fulfilment of national pride. Something to occupy purely for its own sake. Then came Star Trek, Star Wars and video games making it a violent fantasy playground.
Now we're scared of it because we're aware of what can come out of it to hit us at any time. And we want to know where to flee to, if anywhere.
Bowie's track came from that wonder and adventure period.

Though probably more to with Bowie's state of mind at the time and that he used the 'space race' as a convenient metaphor? Always felt it was a call for his own need for isolation rather than any other .. Did major tom shut off the 'circuit', a nod towards just how small we are in the universe or a portent to the events of Apollo13? Either way It's a blinder of a song....!!

Thanks Lman.
And I didn't consider that myself Andy. Though I doubt anyone so depressed as to let their feeling of smallness sabotage an entire Space mission would ever pass the board anyway.

Dont think it was Major Toms smallness that was the issue more Bowie's desire to be just left alone.. It wasn't long after that his alter ego appeared right? I dunno heh..
