Commodore Remix

There are some fabulous Electric Boys loader tunes I can't find on SID, despite scouring the Web. So I was wondering if some kind person out there would rip them for me.


I tried looking for something to rip them for me but only got as far as conversion tips on tunes made with old packages:

These are four intros, plus one demo tune at the beginning of the Heavenbound promo, on Commodore Format issue 50's tape.

No surprise that there's some PRI or Fanta in there, well worth exploring their whole dirs in HVSC as there's some quality stuff to be had.

Wow, thanks Waz. Those tunes and graphics were my first experience of Commodore programmers at their very best. Programs never seemed so stylish before and I've always loved playing them.

Now tell me, how did you know or remember where those loader tunes were? Looking under Electric Boys or Commodore Format Loader returned nothing and no wonder. Though I already had the main Heavenbound music, so didn't even look for that.

It won't do. Purely because it was common practice for Electric Boys at the time to use tunes from demos (ie: in the public domain) for this sort of thing with CF. In a way it did expose the musicians to a wider audience so that was also a good thing as well as some self-promotion for their software too.

Using VICE, it was pretty easy to fire up the machine code monitor and do the M command to look through memory. In all the loader cases, around the $1000 mark you'd often get a string like this:

TUNE BY FANTA/MAITEC/CROSSLINE

From there it was easy to browse through the dir and listen by ear. You could also get a matching string in the hex code itself (using the actual data portion of the music is best for this) and do a string search within the fils in the folder to locate the right one as well if you weren't sure.

One of them didn't have a string to say who the tune was composed by, but I knew it was a cover of the theme from Enlightenment: Druid II, so one quick check of STIL and a listen to a few of the SIDs there soon had me finding the correct one.

Now, I highly recommend some time spent listening to the SIDs in /MUSICIANS/P/PRI/ !!
