Makke - Thanatos
Since It's Binary, Baby! has gone off the radar for a while, I decided to release the remixes here on RKO. I will release one track per month in track order from the album. I decided to remaster the tracks. Not sure if they're better sounding or just different sounding, but they've been remastered from my original Renoise mixdowns.
This is the earliest remix I finished for the album - the only track from the first batch that made it to release. I had about 75% of an album completed, but was unhappy with the overall quality of ideas and production. So I scrapped it.
I switched from Fast Tracker 2 to Renoise to be able to get VSTi's and better mixing. A good move. Listening back to the difference in production quality, it was a big leap forward for me and I developed a lot during that time.
Hence Thanatos is the only track on the album made in Fast Tracker 2, with final mixing and effects added in CoolEdit, as I used to do it back then. It has definitely aged pretty badly, but considering the primitive tooling I think it sounds pretty good.
The sound is an attempt at Depeche Mode's Violator in general and Enjoy the Silence in particular. I remember getting flak for the cheesy environmentalist lyrics. The lyrics aren’t great…
Lyrics
Look into the future, tell me what you see
A burning desolate wasteland, the home of you and me
We all know what is coming, but do not change our ways
Too stuck in old behaviour, too lazy to amaze ourselves
With what we could've been
With what we could've done
Looking for a star, reaching for the sun
So for all it seems
We sacrifice our Earth cuz the sky is our dream
Too busy being selfish, too busy wanting more
Not stopping for a moment, thinking what it's for
We all know what is coming, we know it far too well
Still we will do anything, we will even sell ourselves
For what we could've been
For what we could've done
Looking for a star, reaching for the sun
So for all it seems
We sacrifice our Earth cuz the sky is our dream
