Nemesis The Warlock - arranged by Craze

Review by Adamsen, 20/06/2009

Ok… I've listened quite many times on this arrangement now, and I'd like to write my first review ever… we'll see how it turns out. 😊

I just had to write something more about this tune than a few lines.

To start with, it's a complex arrangement indeed. My first impression is that someone tried very hard but made something average. I had to listen a few times more to see the potential and what's good and bad, and the more I listened to it, the more interesting it is.

So here's what I think about it, going throw all the parts (yeah, many parts, it's a damn long title song).

0:01 Great start and dramatic string.

00:31 Ahh… nostalgia! (I'd like to have different gong sound)

1:04 The melody drowns a bit in the rest.

1:12 This part is nice and sad.

1:48 Hitchcock like sound, I'll get an ill omen feeling. Good stuff. Then the coming part from 1:50 is kind of the main theme of the whole song. The original SID is more aggressive here. You are still keeping to the sad feeling mood here. Well, it's OK, it works… but I'd like more aggressiveness here.

2:25 Great - this part is really nice! The solo string sounds really authentic and the build-up of rock guitars in the background is creative.

3:05-4:07. The weakest part in the arrangement. The rocky sound and classic strings doesn't really match in this part… or it's something else. Can't really put my finger on it.

3:27 Things are starting to get a bit more interesting, but still a bit weak.

3:58: It gets more intensive and actually better.

4:07: Now we're rolling again!

4:33… the main theme here with lots of pulse and aggressiveness. Gotta love this! I'm getting goose bumps here. 😊

4:43 The strings play an interesting pattern here.

4:55 This part is OK.

5:05 We have a disharmony here, but I guess this is intentional? Reading your web page I am guessing that you are tearing up the harmonies with the guitar here to make the listener less comfortable and have merciless feeling? I like the idea (_IF_ it's intentional that is…).

5:16-5:35 This part is OK but not great.

5:35 Awesome. This is beautiful.

5:55 And the fade out from rock guitars to the original starting style. This is truly beautiful.

6:16 And the ending is totally there, just the way I'd like it.

I'm gonna be a bit hard on you for a start. You say on your website that you spent 80 hours on the whole tune. Ok… then I ask myself: why on earth spend 80 hours on a great arrangement and then NOT spend the additional 20 hours to polish and finish the work with good mastering and fix up the details?? It feels like some sound frequencies collide here and there, and some string sounds are a bit dark and blurry at times. I have to agree with some other comment - why not get help from someone that is good at mastering. This arrangement deserves something better. It's somewhere between average and good, but I'll give you Good since I'm in a generous mood.

All in all, I think you follow the original SID well and the feeling of the original tune is definitely there. This is probably Rob Hubbard's darkest tune and one of the most slaughtery and violent games made to C64. I think you are setting the feeling right from the beginning. So… nostalgia factor: outstanding.

Now to the artistic part. I can see that you have struggled a lot and I don't think you succeeded entirely, but that belongs to the technical execution. The will to do something different is there which I value a lot. You tried to mix classic symphonic style with rock… and I can hear that it was pretty difficult. I am having a hard time to make up my mind about what I should give you here… Very good or Outstanding… I think this tune competes well with Reyns version. It's a long tune, and I'd say it's artistic all the way and it has succeeded to

still keep my interest although it was a bit difficult to sink into from the start. But not many songs here give me goose bumps, and knowing that this tune is still great to listen to after 10-15 times of listening, I'm gonna give you and outstanding on artistic impression.

(By the way, about Reyns version, I still think he's the king. I'd say Reyn has: Technical-outstanding, Artistry-outstanding, Nostalgia: very good).

I listened to another of your tunes here, GhostnGoblins, which plays in a different league. Comparably primitive stuff. It's interesting to see such leaps in complexity from one tune to another. I am interested to hear what you will be able to compose in the future.

Nemesis The Warlock - arranged by Craze

Review by LaLa, 16/06/2009

I have a love-hate relationship with this remix. The intro until 1:11 - love it. The part between 1:11-1:45 - hate it. The bass guitar heavy arrangement between 3:05-3:57 - love it. The lead guitar arrangement between 4:02-4:31 - love it. The chaos of 5:04-5:35 - hate it. The ending from 5:35 - love it.

This remix seems to suffer from too much variety. The symphonic Metallica (a la S&M) style really fits this tune. The purely symphonic parts are too simple and too dry to be enjoyable. The chaotic anarchist part sounds too much out of tune to my ears.

All in all, kudos for daring to be different and for going for something completely different, but it's not really fleshed out here and stylistically it seems to go all over the map in a relatively short amount of time. There are some great gems of ideas in there, though - next time concentrate on those.

Liljedahl is God (Green Beret+Rambo) - arranged by Mordi

Review by OJ Oscillation, 01/05/2009

I really love the tracker file that i have of this piece. this rmx takes it to the same level with some additional fills like the vocoder like female hook. the bass goes deep and the lead cares a very feelfull mood. a bit dull in two arrangment parts of it imho, could be a bit brighter. the whole tune is very atmospheric and transparent. everytime i get lifted by this tune. if you like soulfull music, this one is a have to have it.

Parallax (Andes Ocarina mix) - arranged by Kurrel the Raven

Review by OJ Oscillation, 30/04/2009

What a nice touch of a parallax. i'm feeling like i'm standing on a mountain right in columbia (somehow i also feel being in a coffee commercial). this tune plays right away a human live-played-feeling, in every aspect. no sign of miditiming or computer added music making.

so does the instrumentals. a very organic and emotional remix at a very charming factor is this fine piece. the style suits very good to the melody part of parallax. but in the end i miss something: the music is too short. i would like to hear this tune like a 5 minute score. very well done mr. raven. thank you for the music.

Liljedahl is God (Green Beret+Rambo) - arranged by Mordi

Review by LaLa, 14/03/2009

A remix of a remix (of a sort-of-remix!), hmm…

It's tough for me to give you high praise for the arrangement because most of it comes from Liljedahl's brilliant remix and the part that never fails to give me goosebumps (even here) - the Green Beret part - is present in this remix almost unmodified (and it's even repeated several times, which I do like). The only big change here, of course, is the switcharoo between the Rambo and Green Beret sections.

I'm also not too impressed by the relatively soft lead sounds which almost make the melody line disappear. They are drowned out by all the other stuff going on. Have a listen to the Galway is God 2000 version from the BIT II album which enhanced the original MOD/XM even further by making the lead sharp and pronounced, which to me sounds more appealing.

But that's actually only a minor complaint of mine about the technical side of your piece, because all in all, it's a technically very impressive remix. Artistically it's also very impressive - but only because of Liljedahl's talents.

BTW, somebody noted it's very Jarre-like. I laughed out loud - of course it is, since Galway's original Green Beret SID is inspired by Jarre's Night in Shanghai to begin with…

PS: 9 years later and I still get goosebumps listening to it… An amazing piece of music!

IK+ (Firestorm remix) - arranged by Firestorm

Review by Largamon, 31/12/2008

Technically this remix is excellent, but then again I wouldn’t expect anything less from professional of this caliber. Hubbard’s classic tune is kept intact, but I wish it was slightly louder. Now it tends to disappear under the weight of added instruments and explosive beat – which by the way certainly deliver. There’s also a slight feeling of repetition, but this is countered by expertly crafted nuances for careful listeners. However, I still think that lead solo or something could have done wonders here. (It’s been awhile since I heard the original melody so I can’t reliably compare the two.) Final build-up feels like a C-part and creates anticipation for returning beat that disappointingly never comes. Obviously this remix doesn’t want to mess with original source, but I don’t think it brings the best out of it either. And that’s probably the hardest thing to achieve in a remix. In any case, this one makes me want to turn up the sound - impressive entrance from Firestorm and I definitely want to hear more from him. Someone this capable can do amazing stuff.

Neo future shock - arranged by Cubud offline

Review by japster, 18/11/2008

I have to say that I disagree with some of the points made about this remix - I've had the chance to listen to the original (thumping!) SID track, and this one follows it bar for bar…

All of the other remixes I've heard only took *some* of the track, whereas this one has all of the transitions, and is pretty mush perfect, even down to (yes) the repetitive drumbeat - that's actually why I enjoy it more - it's bang up to date, yet *faithful* enough to the original that I can listen to it without being disappointed that all of the original bits that made Futureshock such a SUPERB track in the first place haven't made it, as in some earlier/alternative remixes…

I say give the guy credit for what he's done, wihch is follow the original perfectly, but with some great alternative sounds - and in my book that's a *good* thing, and a faithful remix of this great demo track that's *long* overdue!

Download it, pump up the bass, listen well, download the SID, listen to that too, then appreciate that this is a CRACKING and faithful remix!

As for me? - my wait is over, though I'm happy to enjoy the fruits of others having a stab at remixing this superb track!

Hyperbased - Enigma - arranged by Amok

Review by alexh, 16/11/2008

It is a good remix but it is not really in the same style as the original. A very right wing remix. Still very good. I prefer the original though. The bass is deeper and samples more crisp. The vibrato quite different. It looses something of the original in the translation.

I was hoping for a 21st century version of A Final Hyperbase and I think I got a 22nd century version! It grows on you though. Slightly better than the version by Virgill

It's a Noisy Pillars Tune 2 (Ketchup Girls Mix) - arranged by DJ Mitch

Review by WizardOz, 20/10/2008

It's a sin!

The start of this remix made me check if Pet Shop Boys had got into my playlist. Near copying the start, I was afraid of this getting in violation with the copyrights.

But then it woke up. It sounds like a fresh take on the song, and there isnt a trace of Ketchup in it.

The reverb could have been dampened somewhat, there is a lot of sound hitting the ear, but all in all, its a great soundtrack feel to it.

Best used when fealing down after a sin… 😊

Tintin On The Moon - arranged by BeeZerk

Review by LaLa, 05/09/2008

This SID is near and dear to my heart, so maybe my expectations were too high, but this remix is just wandering left and right aimlessly and doesn't go anywhere. It holds so much promise until about 1:30 but then - nothing. We get simple piano instead. Sorry, that just doesn't do it for me. Then it builds up again and - nothing. It's frustrating to listen to! It has all the right elements to make it a great remix, it just seems to be afraid to go that far. Too bad.

Super Cars 2 - arranged by Barry Leitch

Review by andreasaudio, 22/08/2008

I bought the Immortal 3 album specifically for the Super Cars 2 track. This is my all-time favourite amiga tune from my all-time favourite amiga game. Eagerly anticipating a song that will blow your ears off (as promised on www.barryleitch.com), I almost felt swindled hearing reggae from my speakers. I have nothing against reggae in itself, it just doesn't fit this frame. Originally this is an awesome rock tune which here luckily picks up a beat at the uptempo in the end. However, with the original composer and real intruments at disposal, this track could be so much more than it is. I also would have thought Leech would have taken the el-guitar to the levels he couldn't reach with the Amiga chip instead of using electronic phaser sounds.

The original remains king of the hill.

M.U.L.E. (Aerobics in the jungle mix) - arranged by Mahoney

Review by Procyon, 20/08/2008

I was watching TV recently, and the advertisement for Foot Locker and Nike's House of Hoops campaign came on. The music sounded so familiar. I thought they used part of this remix. So I did some research on the music in the ad. It turns out that the beat which Mahoney used as the background to this remix was originally created by DJ Strobe. The Track is Kodo - Strobe's Nanafushi (Satori mix) from the album Sai-So: The Remix Project out on Sony/Tristar music. Granted, Strobe's beat and the M. U. L. E. theme sound so great together, it's like they should have always been one track. But I thought it was interesting that I didn't find any mention of DJ Strobe's beat in the information about this remix, and I thought it should be clarified.

Review by Tankscore, 30/07/2008

Hello Jose A. Martin,

Are you the genuine Jose Martin who composed the original tunes for Commodore 64 and Amiga? If true, it would be great for me, because I grew up listening to the A. M. C. tunes for Amiga. That tunes really touched me and were a deep influence in my music sense.

This remix is really cool and harmonious. But everyone has to know the original one to appreciate this.

Thank you for changing my life.

Compleeto - arranged by Slaygon

Review by LaLa, 15/07/2008

Finally! A remix of this wacky and weird Top 100 SID! Kudos for trying to remix this admittedly very hard tune.

But drop the broken record intro. It's horrible, it pains my ears. What were you thinking, Slaygon?

The groove of the remix is awesome, fits the tune well. I really like the fact that the original's arrangement was left fairly intact - it works, why bother with it? I even like the occasional SID sounds here and there from the original, enhanced by modern instruments.

Overall, though, it's lacking something to make it really special. Somehow it doesn't feel as wacky as the SID, it's like a wild animal that got tamed in captivity.

Massive respects for the effort, though. It's a unique remix of a unique piece of SID tune.

8 years on and it still sends chills down my spine. The opening with the birds chirping is a great counterpoint for all the synth pads, the drums appearing 2+ minutes into the tune are a subtle driving force, and the undertones present throughout the arrangement are just superb.

As brilliant as Reyn's remix is - which is the one that provided the inspiration for this remix - sometimes I actually prefer to listen to this tune over Reyn's version. It feels more polished, more velvety, more comforting. And it never fails to make me wonder.

Comic Bakery - arranged by Mongo Erectus

Review by LMan, 02/06/2008

Interesting approach, although it's kind of overdone with the bit-crushing and distortion: it initially might make you wonder if the destroyed sound was intentional or an unfortunate accident during the mixdown.

The second part from 2:48 onwards finds a better balance between distortion and distinguishable sounds: it doesn't try to do everything at the same time.

Overall, I would love to hear this with better execution and smarter use of the distortion effects. Thumbs up for daring something out-there with the oft-remixed Comic Bakery.

Monkey Island Title (FLOWMARKT - IRON - AFFEN IN FARBE) - arranged by wendelin

Review by Ic3m4n, 01/05/2008

I do not understand people who just comment to vote a track down… But that´s a topic for the board i think.

I would have loved this song, even it would be in english, spanish, chinese or swedish. It´s the artistic aspect that counts! And not the nationality… Back to the track:

The relation is there. Great choice of lyrics! And they are perfectly implemented.

The original theme is very accurate recreated. If i hear those caribbean, i feel like in old times. For me this song really transports the retro-feeling. Nostalgika in perfecta!

The mixing coulndn´t be better… the percussions, pads… simply everything is in it´s right velocity! Something i still try to get right😉

But!… … No Gem without a scratch… it´s way too short: P - But this (personal) feeling don´t drive the rating down for me.

All three criterias are fulfilled and needs to have the tomato-face ^^

Hope to hear some more - sometimes

Cauldron II (live at The Church) - arranged by Reyn Ouwehand

Review by ggeudraco, 01/05/2008

This remix starts off with a good drumbeat to get you started; it's not too complicated and gets you warmed up. This soon gets accompanied by another well chosen instrument about 30s later, which then gets replaced with another. This is a different method being used here, and I think it works much better than the previous way, which used up to about five instruments at the same time.

The choice of using Mellotron and the choral is very wise, adding to the spooky theme that Cauldron II is supposed to provide. If you were told that a Rhodes piano would make a good proportion of this remix, it would be hard to comprehend, but there actually appears to be no problem at all using it.

In general, Reyn's not putting in too many instruments at the same time, letting off one if one more needs to be used. It's very well edited and laid out, but I would wish for a few more bars of the Theremin at the end of the track. It would really suit the spooky setting to have a long outro, like it was in the raw Sunday Service version - this would be my only qualm with the remix. I very much enjoy this and denounce the criticisms Reyn makes in his blurb (sorry).

Blood Money Title - daXX 80s Remix - arranged by daXX offline

Review by nzo, 30/04/2008

Although this wasn't a track that had a lot of remix potential - at least not in the musical sense, this is a fairly good attempt non-the-less. The original was written in about 90 minutes as an exercise in checking out the capabilities of a new tracker, where larger samples were permitted for the first time, thus was really a proving test. Unfortunately, it ended up on a demo disk which found it's way into Psygnosis, and because of the pure luck of the sample" content, it ended up being used for an appropriately named game - with a couple of tweeks. Don't be too harsh on the original, as Dr Future says… it was a first for it's kind. The original was definately a marmite track - love it or hate it… but this is an extremely brave and commendable attempt at recreating the old 80's feel of the original. Music can be faddish, and this was definately right at the time… but ages badly - however, the author has done very well to retain the essence (where the hell did you get the HQ voice samples - lol) and provide a very acceptable variation on the original. Fans of the original will like it for sure, but the uninitiated will no doubt be clueless… that also includes < 30 year olds😊

Nemesis the Warlock (live at The Church) - arranged by Reyn Ouwehand

Review by ggeudraco, 25/04/2008

The remix starts nice and quietly, building it's way up slowly - I find this is good to get comfortable with the track. However, at around 2:00, the inclusion other instrument feels a bit sudden, quick and overpowering the piano that started the whole thing off; only recovering with the harpsichord at 2:55.

This soothing calm is rocked again by the use of the SID sample at 4:30. While this may be considerate towards the nostalgia of the track, I think it would have been better used on a remix using synth. As the track reaches its end, the fading of each instrument goes smoothly and ends nicely with the piano solo that started the whole thing off (with appropriate Sunday Service bells).

For those who would start listening to C64 remixes, this may seem quite overdone and easy to criticise. But it must be noted that this was performed live on SLAY Radio, which shows Reyn's skills with multiple instruments and quick improvisation, and that is what rates this track highly. To respond to Reyn's blurb for this remix, I notice no significant glitches in the performance nor any issues with sound quality that can be heard over desk speakers.

Because of these considerations, this is a good early candidate for ROTY.

This remix is pretty close to a red one. The Rhythmguitars sound ace and the drums are arranged very professional. The guitarsolo at 1:36-2:00 sounds a bit odd, and this trumpet-part at 3:30 can't convince me, because it sounds a bit like a mixture of folklore and a christmas tune.😉 It's awesome apart from that! The Great Giana Sisters - arranged by Reyn Ouwehand

Review by ggeudraco, 31/03/2008

As you hear the initial solo guitar, then the starting drumbeat, you realise that Reyn has set up this remix to just get straight into the action - there's little room to get settled before he gets started with the body of the track.

Regardless of this, his choice of instruments is very wise - using a drum to keep the beat, while using twinkly metal percussion to add a special charm to the magic and whimsy that the original music was supposed to convey. However, the use of a honky-tonk piano is a strange choice, offering a (pleasing) deviation towards the style that the original track had.

Something that does intregue the ears is a specific sound that occurs from the middle of the track onwards. Whether this was intended or not, you can hear something in the background like a 'woah', as if a key got mispressed during recording. To me, this adds to the realism of the track, and makes it sound more like a live session than anything else.

As Reyn expresses his diversity in his musical talents through the use of many instruments (potentially splitting the track into 6 parts), the leading guitar finishes the track - you get the feeling that all has been done, but there's little lead-out to relax you enough for the next track in the album.

I rate this remix highly, but you can't help the feeling that there could have been something appended that gives the listener a feeling of depth and involvement, rather than a general feeling of enjoyment.
